Nature reports that scientists are leaving Twitter. Overwhelmed by anti-science and far-right material, which is often shoved at them by the site’s trending topics and other algorithmic feeds…

Roughly 46% have joined other social-media platforms, such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads and TikTok.

I have noticed some scientist content on mastodon turning up in the microblog section of my magazine. It’s cool.

Twitter X has been a flaming garbage dump for most of its life. The only thing visible at any given time is drama and outrage. Those looking for serious discourse and discussion fled long, long, long ago.

I hope they all move to Mastodon. Sure it will be sort of a “brain drain” on twitter, but it’s not like the people on there listen to scientists anyway.

X has got horribly toxic - just not the place to have any type of discussion any more. I’ll bet two years back no-one would ever have though X could go down like this. I always thought it was going to happen to Facebook first, but seems Zuck is at least not as simple-minded as Elon is.

Twatter has been toxic for years, the only reason its obvious now is because they stopped moderating and brought back all the Nazis.

Has the site really changed that much since the Muskification, or are people just exposed to more negative stuff because the Elon hate-bandwagon is amplifying everything?

I don’t use twitter at all, so I have no frame of reference.

“And you know what else I don’t like? The Moon! Why does it have to chase the Sun away? Every day? It’s like clockwork! I mean, you could maybe probably set your clock to it. I wouldn’t. But maybe more dumber people. They might do it. And another thing, sometimes I don’t want to go to sleep yet! But no…we gotta have the moon. Gotta have it. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just have the sun? I mean I have a great tan. You could say I have the best tan. People love it. I have the best tan. I look great. I feel great. I’ve never felt better. I might live forever, doctors say. I think I might be aging in reverse. You know, that Benjamin Bratt disease. Boy, wasn’t he great for inventing the dollar bill and kites? Love kites…they’re great. Dykes, not so much! And we love the wind, don’t we? Kites and dykes, both love wind. Can’t fly the kites without the wind, right? And you know the climate is doing so great now. We have the wind. The water, the fire, the earth. It’s amazing, I tell ya. What was the question again? Yea, I slept ok.”
