TLDR: is the buzzing in linked video normal / okay / expected? If not, is there a way to fix it?

I’ve just been putting my Creality K1 through it’s paces, and after using up all the hyper PLA that came with the unit, started printing some inland black basic PLA. Since then, I’ve noticed some buzzing sounds on either pure x axis or pure y axis moves. Video attached showcasing it. It doesn’t seem to create any buzzing on infill moves or perimeters that have a radius. Any straight lines though seem to cause the buzzing. Prints seem okay (though inout shaper seems off for sure looking at corners). I don’t remember it happening with the hyper PLA which I printed at the same speed (I am printing the black inland at higher temp to compensate for reduced flow).

Thanks for any help or feedback! Enjoying the community on Lemmy here so far :)

It sort of sounds like a resonance thing to me. If you try speeding up or slowing down the print and it stops making that noise, it’s most likely resonance. Are you able to get an idea of where the noise seems to be coming from? Like the gantry or base, etc. I also know people have been putting automotive sound deadener inside the enclosure on the bottom panel as it seems to make a lot of noise from resonance.

It seems to be coming predominantly from the hot end / extruder assembly. I have seen that various folks have resonance issues on this printer, so I’ll see if I can track down any more of those fixes. I did try the side panels off, loosen one of the screws, move the head around, retighten the screw thing, but that doesn’t seem to have made any difference. So I guess the gantry is square but something is causing resonance in the print head.

I can’t believe it would be the extruder, but I am a little curious about it since it also seems to have some odd extrusion effects (essentially like what I’d imagine it would look like when you “skip” over a surface by dragging something along; little splots, then thin, then little splots, but almost imperceptible due to the very high frequency of the micro stutters — first layers look almost flawless too so not really sure what the deal is).

I have an I3 mega s and my printer makes the same noise on the z-axis when going in a straight line. I never really thought it was odd since it prints just fine. In my experience there isn’t any correlation between filament and the noise, it happens with both PETG and PLA. But did notice that on some models it happened more than on other, probably because some models have more single axis paths than others.

Oh that’s interesting. I wonder if it’s a resonance thing / something a little loose. Maybe I’ll try retensioning the belts and see if that helps. If anything works I’ll mention it, just in case it’s related to your buzzing too!

Also, I am planning on purchasing some more hyper PLA to see if I can observe the same buzzing with that filament. I can’t imagine the filament type would cause the buzzing, but strange things do happen. Will report back here with any findings on that, but if anyone else has any thoughts in the meantime on this buzzing, I’m very keen to hear them!
