  • Yeah it’s very bizarre how so much is still physical over there. CDs and DVDs everywhere. Payphones that actually work. Everything’s cash too. Every time I come back from Japan I have a sack of coins.

There’s also a lot of advertising there about eating healthy or recycling. Not as any specific product, but just odd public awareness campaigns done by cities or interest groups. That feels really 90s

I’m sure you can agree though, the most 90s thing Japan does is how everyone smokes everywhere.

That’s the same way a lot of words were developed though. Like the word “fence” to mean someone who buys stolen goods came about due to thieves’ cant, a bunch of words used by thieves and beggars to confuse medieval cops. I think it’s better to say words can adapt to situations rather than saying it’s being forced. A ton of words that were underground slang are now just normal words.

I think at this point the average American conflates “liberal” with simply an attitude on how much you hate or don’t hate queer people, regardless of any other political sentiment. One time a chud told me the only real political issue is abortion.

us americans are not, to put it lightly, an intellectual country

  • I really respect the area of Kerala and its commitment to their public. Very robust educational system, healthcare, and a focus on access to clean water. That’s just from stuff I’ve seen and read though, I’ve never been to India, I’m American.

I hope the best for India’s future, but it seems worrying from what I hear. I would hope for greater collaboration with China and an easing of tensions with Pakistan. India is a massively diverse place though, with multiple languages and even multiple writing scripts, so sometimes it’s amazing it’s a functional country at all.

Most of what I hear though is about India dominated by very right wing movements, but there’s a strong history of Indian working class movements as well. I’ll try to be optimistic about the future. Also as an American I am fully aware of my country’s horrifying exploitation of the Indian people. The Union Carbide disaster is still the worst industrial accident in history and its impact should never be forgotten
