They’re practicing the rhetoric strategy known as Bonapartism, which is when you claim to be neither left nor right, but a third way, which is nonsensical as realistically you gotta stand for something. As for this party’s actual views, they’re social fascists (socialdemocracy for me, fascism for thee). They’re wildly racist.

The issue is that there are also many “progressives” who are like this, ex: supporting the kidnapping of the president of Venezuela or the invasion of Iran. Just because someone might be less bigoted to queer people or immigrants it doesn’t mean they’re any less imperialist, unfortunately. And this isn’t just a problem over there of course, I know too many people from my country who side with our comprador elite rather than workers like them.

That’s an opinion piece, I disagree with the quoted bit as I don’t think people calling Russia imperialist are doing so because they believe we exist in an era of financial capital, etc etc, I think they say Russia is imperialist because they’re trying to equate the western empire to Russia and I don’t think they’re the same in scale or in character, even if I don’t think Russia is moral or whatever.

The issue is that empire and imperialism aren’t simply “big country bullies small country”, imperialism describes a specific relation under financial capitalism and Russia doesn’t fulfill the conditions. That doesn’t mean we necessarily think Russia is good, or moral, or whatever, but that calling it “imperialist” is incorrect.

We don’t have a unified view of Russia. Those who see Russia more positively do so because it’s weakening the west. But whether we see Russia positively or not, we don’t necessarily like its government, or Putin, or whatever else. I might push back against propaganda and remind people about the coup, but that’s about it.

I don’t know the author but I did a quick search within the article, which didn’t call Russia an empire, nor does it claims Russia is engaging in imperialism, it only called Russia an aggressor.

Can’t say much about Russia since it’s not what I’m most informed about, but when I see people criticize China it’s normally debunked stuff which is very annoying. It’s not that the US “also” does the same, but rather that they’re projecting based on state department propaganda something that China isn’t even doing. So yeah we’ll share sources that already deal with the claims and hope people learn more about it. Some of us are way less patient or more rude, but that’s my perspective why.
