whoneedsgravy@lemmy.ziptointerestingasfuck@lemmy.world•The world map is changing: The UN has backed replacing the 500-year-old Mercator projection with the accurate Equal Earth projection
1·6 days agoIt certainly has its purpose, and always will. People talk like it’s outdated from seafaring days, but not only is there still plenty of seafaring going on, the Mercator got a new lease on life in digital mapping applications.
I called it shitty just because I really like maps, and when it comes to world maps, I think it’s overused, and just plain ugly. I realize that is a completly subjective opinion.

52·15 days agoThere are many equal area world map projections, this one is called Equal Earth. It’s a very solid choice too. Although the very top and bottom of this map are still stretched when viewed on a Tissot indicatrix. Still way better than the shitty Mercator.

Dad Jokes@lemmy.world•What's the name of Canada's spy agency?English
3·23 days agoWell CSIS isn’t really our CIA, because it doesn’t operate in other countries. It’s more like the UK’s MI5. Our FBI is the RCMP. And our NSA would be the Communications Security Establishment (CSE).
CSIS and the CSE are kept in the loop via the Five Eyes, but they just keep track of shit going down in Canada, and let the CIA, MI6, and ASIS (Australia’s CIA) do the dirty work overseas.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•There’s a common perception in the U.S. that taking public transit is dangerous. It's actually safer than driving.
42·23 days agoThat’s a long winded way of saying it, but I agree with you. If you’ve ever been alone and in a scary confrontation on public transit, it’s enough to make you never want to take public transit again, let alone bring your kids along on a trip downtown.
“Statistically it’s safer” doesn’t change anyone’s emotions around what’s actually happened to them. It just makes them think “cool, cool, so I’ll be in that stat as the outlier. Hope they point that out at my funeral.”

A kid once said to me “well you were born in the 1900s…”
Right. If an Obama were to run, it should be Michelle not Barack. Anyway, they have both said they’re not interested, so it’s just a pipe dream really.

It’s like that thing in the drive thru, where the person in the car ahead paid for your coffee. The President pardons the president behind him so the next president can pardon him.
