I’m looking for horror (or at least creepy/scary) movies where a central part of the plot is the protagonist wrestling with the possibility that the monster/killer/big bad is actually all in their head, dealing with others not believing them, or even ones where the audience doesn’t know what’s real. Bonus points for active gaslighting by the bad guy(s). I think the best example is Rosemary’s Baby. Here are all the other ones I’ve thought of. Would love to know if I’m missing some good ones!

What Lies Beneath (2000)

The Shining (1981)

Repulsion (1965)

Jacob’s Ladder (1990)

Hour of the Wolf (1968)

The Invitation (2015)

The Babadook (2014)

Saint Maud (2019)

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)

Session 9 (2001)

Unsane (2018)

Shutter Island (2010)

Bug (2006)

Mulholland Drive (2001)

Take Shelter (2011)

Gothika (2003)

Black Swan (2010)

The Lodge (2020)
