I can’t help but feel this is another form of disproportionate tax. Minimum prices hit the poorest hardest.
I think behind it is an insidious idea that the working class are alcoholics whereas the middle classes are drinking responsibly.
Deaths attributed to alcohol can be seen through the lens of alcohol + poverty, rather than alcohol in isolation.
So this is really treating a symptom, not a cause.
The tax should be proportionate to the cost of the bottle. Bleed em dry with every bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild 1869.

The SG tried hard to get tax from WM control on this. They couldn’t and hence MUP was the next best, which they still had to have legally challenged.

This isn’t a tax either. It only goes to the sellers profit.
Alcohol is already not a good drug and price rises make it even less appealing. This doesn’t really effect people who drink occasionally, it’s designed to deter people from using alcohol as a substitute for proper mental healthcare.
Will proper mental healthcare be easier to get as a complementary measure?
Probably not. Been on the wait list for Lothian mental health since October 2021, called last week to check my place in the queue and estimated wait time. I’ve moved 10 spots since this time last year, and my estimated wait is still around 8 years.
