Ok, yes, I know, EasyTAG is old (like me), and hasn’t been in development for years and years, but does anyone know if I can get it to save metadata changes for songs I have stored on my NAS? I think I’ve tried to do this unsuccessfully in the past, but is there a way to do this? Or is there a better music metadata editor that can make changes to songs on my NAS?

Do you access the music directly through a network share, or is it exposed through a web platform (ex: Plex, Jellyfin, etc)?

If the former then you could use the software through that network share, it should be able to handle those as if the file were local. For the later you may have to retrieve the files to modify their tags locally then reupload the modified version.

Also keep in mind that some platform like Plex will build its own metadata cache from the audio file metadata to speed up things, so you may have to run some process within that platform to tell it to reanalyze the modfified files.

Uh, directly through a network share . . . I think? (Just because I’m on Linux doesn’t mean I know what I’m doing 🙁). If I mount the NAS and right-click on a music folder with songs I want to change in it (open with EasyTAG), EasyTAG will open it, and will initially make it look like I’ve been able to make and save changes, but then if I open the folder again I see that the changes didn’t take.

Please don’t give up on me yet! I’m able to sync files from my laptop to my NAS, add and delete files from there, and change the names of files and folders on it, but I don’t know if that qualifies as write access (I would think that it does . . . ?).

What I can’t change, at least with EasyTAG, are the ID3 (?) tags of the music files I have on the NAS. The NAS appears to be mounted with a samba share (smb://hedges-nas.local.music). When I right click on that folder and go to properties: permissions, it will say something like “file permissions could not be determined” so I can’t do anything via that route. Another, I guess, “path” to the Music folder on the NAS is via gvfs. To actually edit album info and have it take, I need to copy the album folders to my desktop and edit them there before putting them back on the NAS, which is kind of a pain, but not horrible. Maybe I just need another tag editor . . . suggestions are welcome.
