Cyclist here.
We love being able to get around without the risk of being murdered or permanently disfigured by people driving cars. We will intentionally go out of our way to ride on protected routes even if it means extending our travel times.
Drivers disagree. They demand that we ride in traffic where we will slow them down, make them angry, and make them want to murder us.

It’s so weird to me that “drivers” and “cyclists” are presented sometimes like in your message as two different demographics. I guess in some places it is like that. But in my city, I drive to some things, bike to others, take transit to others. I want to be safe and keep others safe in each mode.
I also enjoy travelling without being smushed by motorists!
I will definitely go the long way around, if the route avoids unsafe car adjacency.
I stopped riding in the city after too many close calls with inattentive drivers. I would absolutely start again if we had protected lanes
My favorite thing is to compare 100 cars on a city block vs 100 bikes. If you have roughly 1.4 people per American car, your 100 cars are going to stretch blocks. 100 people on bikes would easily fit into a block or less, especially when people can bike 3+ in a row and dozens in a column.
The space and weight savings are insane. Which also means less tax dollars spent on repairing road damage. It saves you money and makes the city quieter.
