I think a benefit is that if one instance decides to start being hostile and toxic in any way, other instances can just defederate (basically cut them off) with that instance; really helpful when you have instances overrun with alt-right asses and such
Reddit can’t really do that; all you can do is stay in certain subreddits and hope they don’t show up there too
