It would be generating energy but there’s nothing there to capture it. Most of the steam side was thrown out of the reactor or straight up vaporized.
It did however create and capture and insane power spike before the explosion, iirc like 30 gigawatts on a reactor designed for a maximum rating 10x less than that.
Most npp do not consume the power they generate. I am not sure why, maybe it has to go through some resistors first to be at a managable voltage or something
