I dunno but the people who are sorting unpopular opinion by new are certainly terminally online.

maybe they only come online once a week and only want to see just the new stuff since they were last online.

If no one sorted by new, nothing would get votes and then be places in the hot or controversial bins, so then everyone would have just the newest of things.
