I love the series (the first four at least), and I was wondering how you guys thought HoMM IV holds up in comparison. It IS pretty different, but I personally find that I like it a lot, despite it being so different.

Dude. Heroes 3 is SO GOOD. I completely get it.
Damn right!
I played it as much as H3 when I was a kid. I don’t know if I can judge it objectively, but I really do enjoy it a lot to this day, and I enjoy the more ‘experimental’ components. When I get tired of H2/H3, it’s great to spice up the formula. It has some downsides: weaker AI, the town screens and creature models are charmless… standard complaints, I guess you’ve already heard them all. But as I’ve gotten into the game early on, I just came to ignore those parts. There’s also Equilibris to smooth some things out.
The campaigns that throw walls of text at you also helped me become more fluent in reading English. :D
I remember the campaigns slightly more than the ones in H3 that I barely touched, because there was an edgy necromancer hero with a whole campaign around him that I thought was cool
My opinion on it otherwise is more or less the same as yours. It didn’t “look right” to me and I found the soundtrack to be a little bombastic, but I also remember liking the approaches they made with magic and the interactions with heroes mechanically. It felt like a similar leap from StarCraft and WC2 into the proto-moba “lane” of WC3
I’d love to see another strategy RPG work off of the game they were experimenting with in Heroes 4. Songs of Conquest does a lot to recapture the charm of 3, and that’s great but I feel like there’s potential for a different kind of experience with the example of 4
