And yet desktop vlc dev team is absolute garbage refusing to add basic features that many people been asking for years.

It doesn’t even have autoplay next file from the current folder. The official solution is to create playlists. It’s like five extra actions instead of zero extra actions.

It doesn’t even have an email client!

actually good point. There’s so much useless garbage that no one need in a PLAYER software, so much feature creep and zero effort on ux.

Ah come on. Think of all the good free software that sold out. This is a video player that’s cross platform, is a simple install with no additional drivers required, and has kept up with video standards as they’ve progressed over the years. it doesn’t have ads or bloatware or “premium” subscription.

Okay dev may have slowed or stopped and that’s a shame but we have gotten a damn good deal so far.

And if VLC isn’t to your liking there are good alternatives.

I believe it’s open source and considering their cross-platform focus I can imagine they’re a bit wary of adding functionality that might break on one of those or requires maintenance.

It’s possible to contribute though and seem to require an agreement before merging stuff.

If all else fails you could at least create a fork where you add that basic functionality.

Hurr durr default reply “open source do it yourself”. If the feature was requested over a decade ago with overwhelming support from users, if the feature is default behavior for many other opensource players, I can only blame dev team for being stubborn and not giving a fuck about users. When I attempted to switch to vlc I’ve encountered more that one example of this insanity - many old posts asking or reporting something with replies like 5, 6, 8 years later: “still not fixed”, “still no solution”.

Also, if you take a closer look at how it’s developed, it’s not your normal OPEN open source community, it’s a walled garden as much as it can be while still being open source. Devs aren’t focused on UX at all.

So why would I bother contributing to such project? There are better players, even if not cross-platform ones.

Sure thing! Just answer one question: why is there so many mentally challenged people (such as yourself) using lemmy? I’m really surprised to see so many idk who? Retards? Children? Manchildren? And I’m not talking about me being downvoted, I’m talking about people responding more or less like you en masse.

No, actually there arent. Not with this many features.

Some devs do what the comminity wants, some do what they think is best. Theres no reason to even care about that fact.

Hundreds of people are able and willing to work on FOSS projects. If you make a strong enough case, you can get someone to do it. If you dont want to bother, pay someone to fork it for you.

Literally dozens of possible solutions to this. I would consider staying constructive. That way you might actually get what you want.
