“Oh, so names matter? Then the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea isn’t a brutal dictatorship?”
I said almost this exact same thing to my dad, a 72-year-old man with a political science degree, and I saw genuine surprise wash across his face before he said to me, “huh. That’s a good point.” We just sat there with it for a minute.
He’s generally a pretty thoughtful guy but something about that generation doesn’t lend itself to independent reasoning especially if that contradicts conventional wisdom or popular ideology.
Here on Lemmy folks will agree that the name proves the Norks aren’t bad.
I never understood why conservatives would get so bent out of shape and adamant about this. Like, just because the nazis were right wing and conservatives are right wing, that doesn’t mean conservatives are nazis. Edgy 13 year olds will make that generalization, not a serious person.
