    TL;DR: it costs money to build, operate, and keep up the Suez and Panama canals as they’re not natural water passages. The straight of Hormuz is a natural waterway, requiring no maintenance.

    Now, if the UAE were to cut a canal through the peninsula that extends into the straight, they could very well charge for passage.
