Controversial opinion, but I’d probably pick Dark Souls 1. It’s the one I’m most disinterested to play. DS2 is the outsider and has earned its accolades via that alone, plus it’s the most experimental DS game, which is cool. DS3 has fun world building and good combat, or rather my preferred speed, so it beats DS1 in that regard too. DS1 wasn’t particularly fun to play for me in comparison.
The others are one-ofs and have all brought something truly unique to their catalogue, culminating in ER which is arguably, next to DS1 maybe, the most influential Soulslike in existence.
What’s your take?

Déraciné. It’s a proper Fromsoft game released in 2018 with Miyazaki himself leading the development… It’s also a jank-looking 5-hour Playstation VR game. I would not miss it. (Have any of you even heard about it?)
If we only look at Soulsborne games… That’s hard, really hard. I would probably shamefully also go with DS1. I just don’t have any nostalgia for it. Sure the first couple areas are nicely connected, but I’m far more excited to replay DS2 and DS3. Exploration and game progression and first and foremost gameplay feel are simply better there.
Also, if anyone deletes Bloodborne or Elden Ring, I’m breaking into your apartment with a Claymore! /j
I’m continuing my RL1 run in Elden Ring and I’m having a blast :) I thought maybe after playing it so often I would eventually get tired of it, but nope still love it and I have so much fun.
I’ve now played all the way to Godfrey (the real one) and beat him. Currently, I’m dying to Messmer. The Broadsword was phenomenal against Maliketh and Godfrey and decent against Gaius, but crap against Messmer - I have now pivoted to Star Fist against him.
