Let’s say we have some periodic function f. The goal is to represent it as a bunch of sine waves. This is called a Fourier series (FS).
The FS coefficients are given by
⌠2⋅π
1 ⎮ -i⋅k⋅x
f̂(k) = ─── ⎮ f(x)⋅e dx
2⋅π ⌡0
for whole numbers k. We can then approximate the original function with
n
___
╲ -i⋅k⋅x
╱ f̂(k)⋅e
‾‾‾
k = -n
and make the approximation better by making n larger.
For non-periodic functions, we can still get an approximation! The Fourier Transform (FT) uses a continuous range of frequencies instead of whole numbers, and the sum is replaced by an integral (the inverse FT).
FT’s are used everywhere, for example in signal processing and spectroscopy. If a recording contains an annoying high-pitched noise, we can apply the FT and filter the unwanted frequencies. Spectroscopy separates light into its different wavelengths. By comparing the resulting spectral lines with known measurements, we can determine which elements and molecules are present in stars and planets, for example.
idk what more to add ._.

I think ideally it’d be trans-only and fully private (i.e. login required to view anything, no federation) but also somehow federated enough that we could still post here… I’m not fully sure how how exactly that would work though. Maybe two instances on one machine behind a single reverse proxy or something? Idk I’d have to RTFM pretty significantly to see what kind of support there is for something like that. It may already be readily doable without much fuckery.
Of course it’s also possible to just handle the “also posting elsewhere” part by just having separate accounts.
You can have local only communities that only people that are logged in can see.

Sick! In that case I’d think that’s probably exactly what we’d want!

is a local only community but if you want to make a new one let me know.
lemmy 1.0 will expand on that to gives you the option to ask local users to apply for entrance into a private community.
Oh neat, I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks! The thing about local-only though is that a number of the calls have been coming from inside the house.
It seems like the private community would be ideal then as that gives another layer of control over who can access the space, hoping lemmy 1.0 comes soon!
Oh snap yea that would probably do the trick very nicely.

Thank you!
At least one of the trans hexbear communities is local only know. Maybe more? I forget their names tho since I can’t see them anymore
Neat, I didn’t know that!
I think they’re transenby_liberation and anti_cishet_aktion? I still am subscribed to them and I can still see how they were two years ago when they were switched to local-only.
From the looks of it you’ve got a fairly accurate picture of where they are today :-(
