What he did not understand was that this was actually a ritual that involved transmitting genetic material from one individual to another.

And Jaffa certainly were not strict vegetarians. Teal’c’s favorite food was turkey.
EDIT: As for Goa’uld, the only time I can remember seeing any eat at all was Nerus, who was gorging on chickens/turkeys.
