I rarely see anyone under 40 using checks anymore. It’s really an older generation thing and they’re stuck in their ways.
They still get stressed out about manually balancing their checkbooks too. Even though it’s an obsolete skill now and the banks keep track of all of the transactions automatically for them
I had to use a check last year to buy aluminum roofing tiles from a manufacturer.
So first I had to download their order form, fill it out, which was an Excel spreadsheet, then email that to their salesperson, who then sent me the payment form.
And I saw on their payment form that they accepted cash check and money order and credit card, but they didn’t have a place to put in the information for the credit card so I called them thinking I would have to pay with a credit card over the phone.
I mean, they had a website, they knew what the internet was. They understood the concept of electronic money, but as a company they decided that the only way you could pay with a credit card was to show up in person and pick up the materials yourself, and I had no intention of driving 3/4 of the way across the country to save myself from having to write a check.
They had a hell of a special going on and the nearest competitor was twice their price so fuck.
I went to the bank and got the check, I also had to go and get an envelope and a stamp and mail the check to them along with the order form as if the internet doesn’t exist.
That was the most nerve-racking thing. It was like $6,000 and I had no way to verify that I would receive the products I had purchased until they showed up.
And they did show up otherwise I’d have a completely different rant right now, but it was still the most bizarre purchase process I have had to follow in my adult life.
