I’m still surprised Avatar does as well as it does. They’re gorgeous movies, but the stories are so completely forgettable, no character development, just visuals. I could get as much story out of a 3Dmark benchmark.

At least the Avengers movies have made a bunch of cultural memes people talk about. I don’t think anyone knows anything about Avatar other than “big blue nearly naked aliens”

I get why the first movie did so incredibly well, it out at the perfect moment where big CGI blockbusters were still a fresh idea, and it was in the middle of the 3D craze that encouraged everyone to go to the theaters to get the full experience.

As for the sequels, beats me. I saw Fire & Ash with friends when it hit digital and it was ass. I doubt the 4th movie will do as well after that.

It’s like Titanic, story sucks but they made an exact replica of the ship, I watch it for visuals. Avatar is the same (Pocahontas did it better).

“3Dmark benchmark” is a perfect way to describe it.

My other favorite comment on it is that the most popular movie of all time left basically no cultural impact; do you ever hear anyone quote or reference Avatar?

As a comparison, I hear references to the other Avatar (bending, “then the Fire Nation attacked,”) with some frequency.

Aren’t you already on Reddit? I’ve seen that opinion parroted 10,000,000 times while simultaneously praising the marvel films that are below Avatar in every conceivable way.

They’re all just simple popcorn flicks. Avatar just goes all out with the visuals, action choreography and the cinematography.

Marvel movies have similarly weak scripts but they also have horrendous visuals, weightless CGI and every scene must have 1,000 cuts.

It’s okay to not be the target audience for a product. Nobody has to like whatever is popular just because it’s popular.

It doesn’t make sense to be thinking about that. I appreciate what it does well and the simple story serves that. Big budget movies are 99% mindless fun at best.

If you want anything original or out of the norm just go see Digger. It seems that people are happy that it’s not making any money even though almost nobody has watched it. I might go watch it later today.

Lol what? Avatar blows chunks. It’s CGI wank. The story, the action, the lore, all of it is immensely forgettable.

Wanna know how I know? Because when you say Avatar people go “no the blue people kind” it isn’t even the best avatar.

I’ve always seen it as the art being the point more than the story. The Avatar movies are beautiful works of art with some amazing feats of technology behind them; the story is there just to give it some form

It’s funny how thinly veiled the greed of the film industry is. The news headlines are always direct about what truly matters, how many billions they made.

No executives give a fuck about comics or stories, just that their slop made more billions than the other slop.

Didn’t they extend the original release by a few weeks and achieve this exact record back in 2019??
