The deal was to try to get a bump of approval by artificially and temporarily depressing gas prices right before the election, and a fig leaf to rug-pull intelligence sharing with Ukraine (found out about that today, and am angry at, though unsurprised by, that development).

Don’t listen to any USians saying “We don’t support it” yeah actually you do. You’ve supported it because you’ve done nothing about it. The world doesn’t give a shit if you don’t feel responsible. If you live there, you’re part of the problem.

      We don’t, though.

Our electoral system is just fucked six ways from Sunday, our campaign process is luridly corrupt and pay-to-play, the “upper” half of our federal legislature is explicitly designed to be anti-democratic while the “lower” half has been artificially capped to make per-capita representation wildly unequal depending on which state you’re talking about, half of our political establishment wants to kill anyone with darker skin than an Irishman just returning from a vacation in the south of France, and the other half couldn’t fight its way out of a paper bag (and, to wit, was fully shocked that they lost with a pitch of “nothing will change” to a national zeitgeist of “the status quo is absolutely fucked”).
