Jimmy Goodrich, a senior fellow at the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, told CNA on the sidelines of a conference in Taipei that China’s reliance on global supply chains for food, energy and technology remains one factor that “makes Beijing hesitate” to take risky military action across the Taiwan Strait.
… During his presentation, he warned that Beijing’s massive investments in scientific infrastructure could eventually support breakthroughs in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced weapons systems, potentially eroding Taiwan’s technological advantages.

“Taiwan and the United States should be preparing now for a China that could be far more technologically competitive in the 2030s than it is today,” he said.
