Administrative and office staff at OC Transpo will receive raises ranging between three per cent and five per cent a year in a new four-year contract.

The Interest Arbitration Panel has released its ruling for binding arbitration between OC Transpo and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1760. The union represents approximately 350 Transit Service office staff and administrative staff.

Still more than the public service is getting, and definitely more than I’m getting.

It’s still less than inflation will be. Which means every year they make less money, not more.

Except it isn’t. A good bump is inflation +14%, meaning those workers will make 14% more than they are today in 4 years for real.

I’ll eat my hat if inflation is less than 14% total 4 years from now in 2030.

They’re only getting 3.5% per year, which is absolutely better than most of us will get sure, but it’s still not approaching good. Also comparing 2024 and 2025 to what has happened since 2025 and where it’s going to lead is just foolish wishful thinking. Raises that don’t outpace inflation are not raises. Raises that meet inflation are also not raises.

It’s potentially a raise sure, but most likely they’ll see 0-3% total in 4 years over inflation. It’s also very possible they see negative returns on that 14% given the economic situation we find ourselves in.

Edit: Also for the record that last 4 annual inflation calculations put us at 15.2% inflation from 2021 to 2025, comparing only two of those data points is kinda disingenuous.

Look, we can argue the semantics of what a “good” pay raise is all day long. Sure a 25% or hell 50% would also be good. We don’t know what inflation will be in the next 4 years so my opinion is based on current inflation rates.

The reason I took the last two years is those are where it seems to level out after COVID.

Current inflation rates over 4 years is more than 14%. So by your own argument it’s not a good deal.

COVID may have fucked us, but the bullshit going on now will as well. It’s ignorant to ignore just because you want to argue about what a good raise is.

I can’t think of anyone (*) who is getting a raise higher than inflation these days without changing jobs, which is its own endeavor. I’m certainly not getting a raise unless I invent one, and I’m working on that.

(*): Anyone normal. Politicians and folks who own employers aren’t normal.

Yeah, the capitalists are very much against paying anyone appropriately, which is why they’re capitalists.

But that doesn’t make this a good deal just because everyone else is also being fucked. It’s a bad deal for them and everyone else is also getting bad deals.

You’re kidding if you think the NDP would pay employees appropriately either. BC actually pays less than Ontario does for their public servants. Manitoba’s not a whole lot better, and their most recent CBA tops out the pay increases at 3% for a total increase over the life of the CBA of 14%. Or in other words, on-par with what we’re talking about transit workers getting here.
