Welcome to CanadaDisability, a community for discussing disability-related issues, news, resources, and experiences across Canada!
This community is a continuation of r/CanadaDisability, now with a home on Lemmy. Whether you’re joining us from Reddit, elsewhere in the Fediverse, or discovering us for the first time, we’re glad you’re here.
What’s this community about?
CanadaDisability is a place for people with disabilities, their families, advocates, and anyone interested in disability issues to share information, ask questions, and have meaningful discussions.
You don’t have to be Canadian or live in Canada to participate! We welcome members from around the world. However, this is a Canada-focused community, so posts and discussions should have a meaningful connection to disability issues in Canada.
For example, discussing how disability benefits in another country compare with Canadian programs is absolutely welcome. A discussion exclusively about problems with another country’s benefits system, without any connection to Canada, would be better suited to a community focused on that country.
Some of the topics we hope to cover include:
-
Disability benefits and financial support: CPP Disability, provincial and territorial disability assistance programs, the Disability Tax Credit, the Canada Disability Benefit, and related programs.
-
Accessibility and accommodations: Barriers and improvements in employment, education, transportation, housing, technology, and public services.
-
Disability rights and public policy: Legislation, government decisions, advocacy, and developments affecting Canadians with disabilities.
-
News and resources: Relevant news articles, research, community organizations, and helpful services.
-
Personal experiences and questions: Navigating disability-related systems, sharing challenges and successes, and learning from one another.
-
International perspectives: Experiences, policies, and developments from other countries that offer useful comparisons or lessons for Canada.
This isn’t an exhaustive list. If it’s relevant to disability in Canada, there’s a good chance it belongs here.
A few things to keep in mind
We want this to be a welcoming community where people can disagree, ask difficult questions, and discuss complicated issues without being subjected to personal attacks or discrimination.
Please be respectful of other members, their experiences, and their privacy. Disagreement is welcome; harassment, ableism, and other forms of bigotry are not.
You’re welcome to share advice and experiences, but remember that information posted here isn’t a substitute for professional medical, legal, or financial advice.

Help us get started!
We’re starting fresh here, and a community is only as useful as the people who participate in it.
Feel free to introduce yourself, share a relevant article, ask a question, or start a discussion about an issue that matters to you.
Whether you’re here to find information, offer support, discuss policy, or simply keep up with what’s happening in the Canadian disability community, you’re welcome.
Welcome to CanadaDisability!
