A doctor circumcised a seven-year-old boy without seeking his opinion and without his father’s consent, a medical tribunal has heard.

Aren’t circumcisions already often done for religious reasons on infants that can’t consent? The only different bit here is that only one of the parents consented this time.

Given the child doesn’t normally get a say in this no matter what, why act like they care about the child’s opinion now?

Edit: Read the article properly, the boy’s mother is the one that forced this through, so she did consent - which I think actually makes the above more prudent.

      that’s not exactly minor.

Fair point. Worth noting the boy’s mother actually did consent (and I edited my comment to correct that), so the chief problem was the parents didn’t unilaterally consent.

Which is actually kinda worse, cause if the father had consented, the boy still wouldn’t have gotten a choice - so his opinion in what was done to his body still wouldn’t have mattered.

it is bad. I do find it darkly amusing that it’s the meme but reversed :

          The myth of consensual circumcision
          Mother : I consent
          Doctor : I consent
          Father : I don’t consent
Child about to be circumcised : I don’t consent
Isn’t there somebody you forgot to ask?

This is the fourth medical tribunal Mehat has faced.

In March 2019, he was suspended for one month when his fitness to practice was determined to be impaired, due to Nottingham City Council cautioning him for numerous offences in relation to rental properties he owned.

Then, in September 2019, he was suspended for one month because he circumcised a baby without his mother’s consent.

At the time, the MPTS decided there was a “very low risk of repetition” and “no risk to patients” by allowing him to continue working.

    Huh

Why the absolute fuck are unnecessary surgeries being done at all. Insane! On a 7 year old child! That would be horrific to endure at that age. (Shouldn’t be done unless necessary at any age in my opinion, but)

Agree, but a shocking amount of people don’t, because checks notes religious freedom is more important than consent to genital mutilation, or “I want it to look like his dad’s”.

I’m glad mine was done as a baby, as I appreciate how much easier it is to clean. But the idea of someone taking a knife to my dick now scares the shit out of me. That being said, I don’t think it should be any of the parents business. And if the young man wants to do it on his own accord, probably should at least wait til puberty to decide.

The cleaning thing is a myth btw. Dicks, just like vaginas, don’t need to be washed with anything more than some running water and very gentle abrasion (unless they’ve gotten some large amount of dirt or foreign objects in them). They likewise both have a microbiome, which is modified significantly by circumcision.

I know the link to lower STIs is often brough up as well, but it’s got shaky evidence. A recent and very large Danish study found that over “more than three decades of observation, non-therapeutic circumcision in infancy or childhood did not appear to provide protection against HIV or other STIs in males up to the age of 36 years. Rather, non-therapeutic circumcision was associated with higher STI rates overall, particularly for anogenital warts and syphilis.”

I’ve never experienced being circumcized but it’s not exactly hard to clean while not being circumcized.

There is really no legitimate reason to circumcize babies.

The medical tribunal heard the boy was taken to the practice by his mother, who wanted a circumcision for “spiritual and cultural reasons”.

The main culprit. The doctor was an idiot that should no longer be a doctor. I get the feeling something like this might not be the first time for them.
