I’m not sure that the way kids would interact with an AI is as effective for learning as from an actual person

Remember that a lot of kids did not do well with remote learning during COVID, unfortunately.

But we’re talking about part-time tutoring, not full-on replacing school. I think with parental involvment and guidance, AI would be awesome for tutoring. But without, it’d would be pointless, as most things regarding education and lack of parenting.

It’s definitely good enough. Go check out the latest models (but not if you only have the ‘free’ plan) and ask a standard student level question. Especially if you ask a question and ask for references and links.

The free plans that lots of people on Lemmy seem to use in their examples, still sorta suck, but the $20 a month models are awesome for tutoring. And if you have a whole tutoring-style prompt and lesson plans that you feed in to it… it’s legit better than anything that big tutoring companies can offer because of price.

A lot of the big tutoring companies are doomed because of AI. Rightfully so since they were overpriced so that made them mostly available to rich kids. I’m pretty happy to see them go down.

This is very true. As long as a parent sits down and oversees this kind of tutoring, AI can be a useful and much cheaper alternative to private tutoring. It won’t replace a good human tutor in every situation, but for explaining concepts, giving practice problems, and working through things step by step, it can do a ton.

If parents don’t trust monthly subscription corporate models, they could spend money on a decent computer capable of running newer local LLMs. That’d still cost less than regularly paying for a private tutor.

AI isn’t going away, no matter how much Lemmy bitches about it, so we might as well learn how to use it to our advantage. I love AI and use it every single day. Lemmy crying about it so much just makes me laugh.

Ya’ll act like you want to be Amish, but you’re fucking getting paid good money working in tech. Go ahead and quick your tech jobs and work for minimum wage while you avoid all AI. Then come back and tell us how that works out for ya.

Oh I don’t think it’s healthy at all. On the other hand, loneliness isn’t healthy either. A lot of the people who seem to fall for this sort of stuff, seem to have mental health issues that keep them from connecting with others. So I don’t think this is any worse.

I don’t get it, but hey, I think if Lemmy is truly as accepting of diversity as it says it is, then this is one of those things we should probably accept. I don’t understand the AI relationship people, but it’s not hurting me, so let them have their AI lives if it makes them happy.

AI is not going anywhere, and it’s only going to expand. So I’m beyond bored of all the anti-AI nonsense. You all can’t stop it. You won’t even be able to boycott it, because it’ll be incorporated into everything. So more AI babies on the way!

Okay, thanks for the clarification, but I don’t think anyone, regardless of political leaning, is going to be okay with some dude walking into an In-N-Out restaurant and just shooting and killing people. Saying it somehow trivializes the situation because you don’t like a certain political party seems pretty messed up to me.

You’re free to feel however you want politically, but man, I think that’s kind of lame. These people were literally at work or just grabbing some food, and they got murdered. There’s nothing cool, funny, or political about that. It’s just horrible.

Agreed. I vibe code very simple projects for my personal use. Projects I wouldn’t have paid anyone to program for me, and I wouldn’t have paid for any of them. They have been mostly personal training, run tracking, raspberry pi apps, etc. All personalized just for me.

Vibe coding actually inspired me to learn real programming just for fun. But I wouldn’t want to design a consumer app or anything of that nature anyway. Too complicated and I don’t like putting up with people’s bullshit.

I do think AI will get good enough to do ultra complex apps though. In a very short while. Which is why many programmers feel threatened. I get it and sympathize. Meh, that’s the way society advances. Plenty of people in other industries have had to worry about tech advances replacing them. We all just move on. It still sucks, but it sucked for us too.

Ultimately I think AI has more positives than negatives. I’m well aware that most of Lemmy disagrees! lol
