andros_rex@lemmy.worldto A Comm for Historymemes@lemmy.world•Wherever you learned to love history, it's valid! 🙏English2·2 hours agoI got a BA in history entirely by accident.
My college had “flat rate” tuition, so you paid about the same no matter how many classes you took. I’d throw in classes that seemed fun or interesting, and my college career was a mess too.
On the way to getting the degree I actually intended to pursue, I just took so many 3000/4000 history classes that at some point it was like “oh, I can do the survey classes as an inter session and actually get the degree.”
I think the most important thing - the thing you lack from things like Assassins Creeds or Civ or Age of Empires - reading primary sources. Especially when so much is online and translated into English. It is so much more enlightening to go direct to the source.

Bisexuals may play BioWare games if they file out the proper paper work ahead of time and promise to only pursue the gay romance options.
andros_rex@lemmy.worldto Stop Drinking@lemmy.world•The Daily Check-in for 23 May 2025 - just for today, we are not drinking!English4·12 hours agoI had a sober week. Two low point beers over the week. No weed either. This is probably the first week in the past two and a half years that I’ve been mostly sober.
I asked my doctor for trazadone to help me sleep, and it’s been helpful. I’m still struggling a lot with falling asleep and staying asleep, but the trazadone stops the “it’s 2 am and I can’t sleep” reach for the cans.
andros_rex@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•The USA spends $15k/student annually which is 30% higher than the global median. Why do U.S. schools have "fundraisers" where kids are incentivized to sell stuff to people?4·17 hours agoThe fact. He had been moved from school to school before.
He made his student athletes work out naked and showed them his dick to show them “what a real man is like.” It’s amazing how many news articles leave out those details.
Also the fact that the Governor and the State Superintendent are known to be golfing buddies with Ringalings superintendent…. It’s almost as if Oklahoma systemically covers up the abuse of children….

andros_rex@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Every toddler becomes a hackerman when they find a tablet4·19 hours agoI learned so much about computing by modding my own games. Adventure Construction Set, shitty mad libs games in basic, and then later spending basically every free hour from 12-18 years old modding Morrowind.
Gotta wonder how many modern programmers learned from modding Minecraft.
When I was in college, it was funny how the engineering building only had one restroom per floor - they were all mens until like the 70’s, cuz wommin can’t be engineers of course.
Yes please - are you gay?

Why do U.S. schools have "fundraisers" where kids are incentivized to sell stuff to people?4·20 hours agoI worked high poverty district - like, basically all students got free breakfast and lunch, because so many were eligible it wouldn’t make sense to even check.
The district got white flight to shit. No white kids in the middle or high school. There was one elementary school that the rich fuckers would send its kids to. That school was well funded. Teachers from there would show up in coordinated outfits, the kids weren’t thrown in classrooms with permanent subs, they actually got taught. It was in the rich neighborhood, so it had money - both the property tax shit and an actual fucking PTA.

Why do U.S. schools have "fundraisers" where kids are incentivized to sell stuff to people?7·21 hours agoThe other factor to also consider is that public schools in the US have fairly extensive athletic programs, meaning that they spend a lot of the funds to build and maintain things like American Football stadiums fields, swimming pools, etc., as opposed to only funding actual academic education.
I bought my lab supplies. Bare minimum $50-200 a month in supplies. Lab chemicals, pencils and notebooks for students that didn’t have any.
My classroom looked out over the fancy new football and soccer field. One of the middle schools had a field that local semi pro teams would rent out. The district couldn’t even fund busing - we’d have students show up 1-2 hours late every day because of the buses.
Small towns will fund bonds for football fields and cleats; they don’t give a damn about anything else. If you are good enough coach, you can literally show your penis to students and the administration will cover it up, then quietly help you get a position in a new town.

If ES 6 comes out, it’ll have maybe three skills - magic/combat/sneak. Any interesting/complicated lore will be retconned and shoved aside. (Why wasn’t Cyrodil a jungle? Where are my river drakes? What happened to Sutch? Where is my Colovian armor set?)

My ex was a trust fund baby and dumb as rocks. I did his college capstone for him.
When I was in pre-K, on a really hot day, I remember asking why the boys got to take off their shirts but I couldn’t.
Now that I’ve had top surgery, I can be the fat hairy bearded guy that mows lawns shirtless. It’s nice.
I had a couple of 21 hour semesters, 18 hours during the main semester, 3 for intercessions.
I took a two week course on the Vietnam war that kinda “peaked” me. I had done a project in high school and learned about My Lai on my own, but then learning that the Gulf of Tonkin was a false flag and how fucked it was that the US was like “yah no, we aren’t going to let you have the sovereignty you won” - it eroded any faith I had in the government.
Another fave was a course on Byzantine art. The iconography was gorgeous - I was blessed to visit the Louvre a few years later and goddamn was it amazing to see those ikons.
