I like Snaps. They can do more than Flatpak and when packaged well they just work. Sadly some apps on Snapcraft are abandoned or they just don’t work, but the same can be said about Flathub.

Which bridge did they build with snaps?

Proprietary companies are compelled to release on Snapcraft because it gives them advantages over other packaging methods. I’m just a user but I heard Snaps are easy to work with thanks to the documentation.

In addition to all of that, Canonical also installs applications as snap when using the apt\£* command line tools.

Firefox for example isn’t even in their apt repos. So instead of throwing an error, the Firefox meta package installs the snap, and tells you it’s doing that.

But I understand that Ubuntu isn’t for you if you want to avoid snaps.

I think it’s just elitism. The worst example is Chris Titus making a video where he explains why you shouldn’t use Ubuntu. And then proceeds to make video explaining how it’s not actually that bad and he uses it with a different DE.

But now 300K people saw that Ubuntu bad for stupid reasons, from a “reputable” source.

The money comes from corporate customers, that’s the sad truth. If you go to RedHat’s website, their Worsktation option is hidden in menus as well. Fedora doesn’t seem to be mentioned at all.

There’s a Build Your Core button. And that takes you to a docs page that lets you download a pre-built image. I think it’s pretty obvious that this is not the Desktop Ubuntu.

From what I remember, their gnome-software already has flatpak support. So all that will be missing is the GUI snap support. Could’ve been worse.

I don’t wish to learn Nix. I’m perfectly fine with Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora. When a new version comes out, all I have to do is change the versions of the extensions according to the new Gnome version.

Nope, I don’t touch the snap-store on Ubuntus (to be fair I don’t install any snap plugins for gnome software center on Debian/Fedora either). As for flatpak, it’s installed via apt from the regular repos. I didn’t even know there was an up to date PPA.

I know about this but that’s meant for 18.04 and earlier.

Edit: these are good suggestions tho. Something to work on to improve it even more.

inb4 snap bad, they are bash scripts. Anyone can delete any command they don’t like.

Install Ubuntu and see whether you encounter any issues. If not, who cares about what some meme says.

Pretty much. Canonical made a few questionable choices in the past but overall they’ve done a lot for the Linux community. And their distro is very good. There is a reason why distros choose it as their base.

I dare say that allowing any distro to use their repos is pretty generous, and gives back to the community. They have no obligation to open source Snapcraft’s server, and snapd being able to install snaps locally is more than enough.

Let’s look at the very worst case possible scenario: Everyone abandons Flatpak and AppImage and moves to Snapcraft, and Canonical decides to make a decision that destroys the store.

You can still install FOSS apps from somewhere, at worst compile them.

All that would be lost if Snapcradt stopped existing are the proprietary apps, which you wouldn’t use anyways.
