The level scaling is really kind of trash. I played as a kid and it was really hard, and the more I leveled the worse it got.
As an adult it was trivial because I learned not to level, but that was really tedious. Who plays a game to not play a game?
Plus the card game is the most Guide Dang It thing I’ve ever seen. It’s extremely esoteric and the rewards are massive. Also it’s so jarring to be like “oh shit the world is ending do you wanna be cards?”
Wait what? I thought VIII is about as liked as VII
People hate the level scaling in VIII, because the wisest way to play the game is to never level up.
It’s still my 3rd favorite entry in the series, though. I don’t try to min/max, I just enjoy the game.

“Let’s have a game of Gwent.”
Triple Triad is the Gwent of the 90s
I always hear of 8+9 as the black sheep of the classic Final Fantasy games. They were a big part of my childhood, though, so I love them both.
Never heard strong bad opinions about 9. Personally, might be my favorite, although has a very weak villain and ending.
I only remember 8 being the black sheep. 9 was hailed as a return to form, but yeah, 8 was my first and my favorite.
Nine was immediately vilified on launch. The world wasn’t ready for the art style.
