I just catched myself looking at reddit again.
To remind myself not to use reddit in the next few days (or never again if I succeed) I added it to my uBlock filter list. Additionally I deleted all reddit apps from my phone.
What’s your strategy on how to avoid reddit?
A simple low impact one I came up with is moving the Jerboa app icon to where the reddit one used to be and moving the reddit one to the end of the list, so my muscle memory reddit log on takes me here instead.
Same here as well. I uninstalled rif and replaced its icon with Jerboa. I don’t even notice the difference until the screen loads 😄
I put the Jerboa app icon where Baconreader had been on my phone. I kept opening it by reflex. This seems to be working.
Me too. Sorry Boost, I will miss you.
In /etc/hosts:
127.0.0.1 reddit.com 127.0.0.1 www.reddit.com 127.0.0.1 old.reddit.com
Make it the pornhub IP
Hmmm will this work on my work laptop too?
In school, the first thing I did on my Arch Linux Laptop is to put google.com to the pornhub ip. Don’t know why it should not work on any device.
Easy, I just deleted my 10+ years Reddit account.
No regrets, and am now having fun exploring the fediverse.
The fact that I’m digging lemmy is helping. Feels new and adventurous.
Uninstalled Apollo (Christian plz forgive me). Deleted my account.
I think they would understand
Don’t worry, he feels just as bad as you for all of the evil Reddit has done to all of us.
With most subs gone dark there’s basically no content anyway. I’ll probably keep checking until RiF stops working. I’m never going to use the official app or website.
Yeah the fact that I’d have to download a new app and find a new flow if I stayed makes it a lot easier to leave.
Once Apollo is gone for good, I’ll delete the app and that’ll be it. Reddit has too much useful info for me to block it entirely similar to Twitter. But also like Twitter, once the app is gone from my phone my usage pretty much drops to zero. I’ve already replaced Apollo with Mlem on my homepage, but I’m leaving Apollo installed until the end.
If we could implement reddit scrapers (I think stealth for reddit is one of them), it might help us to acess reddit without using the shitty app or even an account. Scrapers aren’t exactly great if you want to post stuff on reddit, not that you would want to…
Lemmy seems to cover most of the content from larger subreddits. For the smaller, or more specific communities (such as local subreddits or those for hobbies/interests) they generally have a Discord server to join.
So between Lemmy and Discord, I’ve eliminated the need to use Reddit at all. This isn’t without it’s flaws or drawbacks, but it ‘scratches the Reddit itch’, I guess.
Kept a note at my home screen about Reddit Black Out. And logged out of Infinity. Now, everytime I unlock my phone, I see that note and open Lemmy🥂
I’ve set a privacy redirect from Reddit to https://libreddit.pufe.org. Now I can’t log in, but if people send me links then I can see what they sent. If I want to comment on things, I’ll come to Lemmy.
I logged in to Reddit this morning for perhaps the last time, to extract my list of subreddit subscriptions. While I was there I noticed I had a bunch of “Reddit Coins”, didn’t even know that was a thing. Missed opportunity for “Creddits” IMO.
I’m not really concerned about avoiding it. Most of the subreddits with content I’d want to read are or will be closed. I only am using the old site, logged out, and with an adblocker. I’m a negative value visitor.
I deleted my account
I unsubscribed to every subreddit that didn’t acknowledged they’d take part of the blackout yesterday. I’ve opened the app once today and was greeted with a “Reddit is killing 3rd party apps (and itself)” post and got reminded to exit the app right away.
Just delete it from your phone
I will, but I have a heard time separating from my Apollo icon it looks superb imo with my background
Reddit has a ton of useful knowledge on it, why would I avoid it? It is not just a platform to doomscroll on… As a social media platform it’s as good as dead for me, but it is still a hyper forum with many worthwhile communities.
why would I avoid it?
To show your support to the blackout while it lasts?
It’s a bit like going to work despite the strike.
Oh I thought OP talked about avoiding reddit in general. I have already visited it at least 3 times today looking for a solution to my laptop’s inability to connect to the internet :P I haven’t thought of avoiding it to send a message, I guess I will simply turn of the computer. I have already deleted Boost for reddit so I will simply not visit it on my phone…
While reddit is used for troubleshooting, I’ve never encountered a solution to a issue that’s not available on other sites aswell. So I don’t see myself needing to use reddit even for the useful information it provided.
