      A long-standing Roman tradition! The thinking was that the ‘forward’ leg would be exposed in a fighting position (especially when one raises one’s shield to block), while the rear leg would be too far away for an enemy to strike. By armoring only that leg with a greave, one minimizes cost and weight for the protection given.

      Two greaves eventually became a symbol of status, even as the use of greaves in general declined.
