LibreWolf is one of the best browsers for people who don’t like generative AI.

Here is the statement posted on Mastodon:

As there seems to have been recent confusion about this, just a quick “official” toot to then pin: we haven’t and won’t support “generative AI” related stuff in LibreWolf. If you see some features like that (like Perplexity search recently, or the link preview feature now) it is solely because it “slipped through”. As soon as we become aware of something like this / it gets reported to us, we will remove/disable it ASAP.

I’m glad this got posted over here.

Two Firefox forks are saying the same thing, and, to be clear, they both are absolutely saying it. One is LibreWolf and the other is Waterfox.

If you’re wondering what the difference is, Waterfox was made to be like a lighter version of Firefox, when Firefox started adding bloat that some people disagreed with. It’s Firefox, but with fewer options (in this case that’s a good thing!), and a different icon. LibreWolf is the privacy-focused Firefox fork. While Waterfox has some privacy options turned on, LibreWolf goes all out in hardening the browser. If you say “fuck AI,” both of them would be a good place to turn. (You should already be on a browser like Firefox anyway, since Chrome and its forks are so hard against privacy and security.)

Firefox is still good enough for most people. I saw the AI feature and I quickly disabled it. There’s more context to these quotes though; it’s not the AI that Firefox has put into its app already; it’s a comment Mozilla made about it evolving into an AI browser at some point in the future. So if you do stick with Firefox, you should have the names “Waterfox” and “LibreWolf” in the back of your mind. Or maybe go look them up! They’re both free, so maybe try one or both alongside your existing browser and see if they are right for you.

(I still use Firefox, but if they get too much cosier with AI, I’m liking LibreWolf’s approach.)
