I’ve always wanted to talk about how weird it was scrolling through reddit and then suddenly seeing myself on the front page. I was banned from reddit for talking about politics (I am anti trump) on the air force reddit so I wasn’t even able to comment on a post about me.
For some backstory, I was returning from a Halloween cruise and it was the only clean shirt I had left (I was planning on wearing it during the cruise as there were no children allowed on the cruise and with the theme I thought it would get a few laughs or at least start a conversation). I never did though and doing laundry on a cruise was quite expensive (I think 50 dollars per load or something like that). I tried to hide the shirt as best I could throughout the day as I do think it was slightly inappropriate to wear in a public setting.
For the record, I love all the comments roasting me and I laughed all fucking day reading them!
Anyways, I have always wanted to publicly talk about this and in my search for reddit alternatives I found lemmy so here we are. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Story time: I had to give a presentation on a group project at university. I was wearing a shirt with a fist silhouette on it, which you could have mistaken as a symbol of a political movement, had there not been the text “nothing says I love you quite like fisting”. Over lunch I had to go home, ~6km, on a bicycle, in the summer, on short notice, because of the plumber being in the house. So I was sweating like fuck and changed shirts. For some reason our team got summoned up to the front again later and my shirt read “I have 5 stars on youporn” with five stars over it. This was in front of 5 professors, ~10 post docs and university employees and ~80 students. On my way out from the cafeteria I greeted the hot blonde from engineering, who looked like she could be an adult content actress, and she laughed the cutest snort-laugh in a shockingly deep voice I’ve ever heard. Most of the profs “loved” me by the way; three of them competed over getting me into their projects and supervising my master thesis.

Clockwork prince by Cassandra Clare. I found the three book series at a thrift store and got though the first book on the cruise and was working on the second.
Was it a good book series? Worth reading?
If you like fantasy, romance and a bit of mystery. It wasn’t anything amazing but I found it for a few bucks at a thrift store and it’s held my attention so far. Apparently there are a ton of books in the series.
Judging by the heft of that book, the author isn’t hurting for inspiration.
Its a YA fantasy novel, written at the start of those getting more popular again. If you are looking for a series to just read for awhile, its not bad - the novels are all actually a decent length, and she has written several series within the same universe.
There is a lot of teenage angst in all of the books though.
Can we turn this into a book recommendation thread? If you want fantasy horror, anything by T. Kingfisher is great. I love the Sworn Soldier books (reinterpretation of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe) and the World of the White Rat series.
If you like litrpg I recommend life at reset… Basically(no spoilers this is book 1 chapter 1) guy is head of huge guild in a mmorpg, he gets betrayed by his friend and turned into a literal monster. As it progresses it goes in several weird directions of philosophy as weird as that sounds.
Was the cruise worth it? Never been on one so don’t know if bringing books is a thing or not.

An MKV could include a host of different audio stream codecs. You’d have to first find out which one(s) your files are using, with a tool like
mediainfo, for example.Some media players like mpv or mplayer variants usually come bundled with a bunch of typical codecs.
Could it be that it’s a “proprietary” one like DTS or AC3 (alias Dolby Digital) which for that reason your distro does not ship out of the box?

It was virgin voyages. I just looked it up and it was actually 30, but still.
Hell, I’m annoyed that my apartment’s laundry service is like video game MTX where you need credits for the machine. The machines are like 2 and a half bucks each, but you can only buy a minimum of $10 worth of credits which gets me 2 loads, and then leaves some credits left over that I can’t use or get refunded.

I used to have that and hated it too but then I moved into a place that only accepts loonies (CAD $1 coins) and I just want to go back to the card based MTX. All it takes is some offended moderator to cry to site admins, and more frequently than not its because you dared to not press puckered lips against the pumpkin colored donut hole of their false-god emperor.
I’d wager good money on the fact that they even run bot nets that mass report any undesirable comment, cause mass reports tend to provoke sitewide bans real fast. possibly automatically
I was temp banned a few times from the air force reddit and then I think they reported it to the admins because I had a perma ban. I tried making another account and it shortly got banned as well. It’s definitely a site wide ban.
Ah, yeah, when you create another account to bypass a subreddit ban (or if they think you did it for that reasons), the admins suspend your account. It can be very hard to come back after that, because all future accounts could be flagged as trying to bypass the sanctions.
TBF, even if it isn’t a perfect system, as an ex mod of a very active sub (a national sub), I prefer that the admins take actions.

source: happened to me. never advocated violence, doesn’t stop them from misinterpreting it. fucking idiots. unfortunately also happens on Lemmy - I was poking through the logs recently and saw someone had blatantly misinterpreted a comment as exactly the opposite of the message it was conveying
I got banned for “encouraging violence” in the COMBATFOOTAGE subreddit for saying we should fly more drones around the Ukraine warzone to make the Russians waste more ammunition trying to shoot them down (the post was a video of some Russian moron emptying his magazine trying to take a Ukrainian drone down).
When I disputed it, claiming it’s not encouraging any kind of violence (unless you count violence towards drones as violence?), I got a permanent site wide ban. After 15ish years on reddit, I called it. That site has sunk so low in the past decade - seems to get worse as time goes on. The censorship there is insane now.
The dissonance of “not allowed to advocate for violence”, while at the same time, not only hosting combat footage, but also it being perfectly allowed to advocate for war or military operations, or talk about how “x country needs to shoot y enemy in this war” or similar, never ceases to amaze me. I literally don’t get it. What is war if not exactly that?
But I guess, if it’s state-sanctioned it’s perfectly fine. Even if, either way, it still results in violence and people dying. Just sucks that you can’t say that a war criminal deserves to die. Fucking double standards

I sat next to her because I was waiting for her to get up and leave so i could sit and face the wall and charge my phone AND be more comfortable reading my book. She kinda put her head down on the table and started snoring so loudly, it was hilarious. I looked around a bit at a few people next to me and we were all kinda laughing at it. She eventually got up and sat down somewhere else and I didn’t notice because I was too into my book at the time I guess.
