“But there is a growing realisation that utterly senseless, self-destructive decisions keep being made. People who once defended Putin no longer do. Any sense of a future has disappeared.”

From what I hear from other sources, this is the mood in most of the Russian federation. There are even talk that Russia can’t maintain control of the eastern part of Russia, because they simply don’t have the money or man power to do so.

Exactly, Russia could have invested their oil money in education and infrastructure, and they could have grown just as fast as China since 1991. And then Putin could have taken the opportunities that were offered by USA and Europe, and today they could possibly have been the biggest economy in Europe.

Instead he chose to sabotage the west, including strong investors like EU and USA, and he chose to make war against Ukraine since 2014, escalating to the full invasion in 2022.

Russia could have been an amazing place today compared to what it is.
Now the Russian economy is destroyed, and Putin has caused nothing but suffering, both within Russia and also in several countries around Russia. Like Belarus and Georgia and of course Ukraine.
But at least it seems Ukraine is stopping the trend, for sure the Russian economy is in ruins now.
