This looks like Newsom is acting in bad faith.
If Newsom actually wanted this tax in any form, he’d support the current California version, and advocate for a carve-out exception for those already taxed previously under California’s version from the future Federal version.
Instead, he’s trying to torpedo the California one that actually has a chance at being implement.
This is what is called political careerism and opportunism. No real beliefs, just whatever way the wind blows.
People who fall for this guy’s bullshit and think he is on our side are so sad and insufferable.
Makes sense, actually.
He knows it won’t pass at the national level, so he doesn’t mind supporting it in that case.
There is that and the fact that it should be a national thing to shut down avoidance options.
There’s a lot of value to banishing billionaires from your state. If they don’t live somewhere, they’re going to be less tempted to spend money to influence the laws there.
But we don’t want them here and California, except for the billionaires and their lackeys and orange county and Fresno and certain undesirable transients plaguing sacramento is a genuinely wonderful place to live if you’re not one of the fire-slaves or something.
Fixing one of those problems would still be a success, and it would deny them something nice that they want. Which would also be nice.
Can also be in the sense that if you enact it in California then they can pick up and leave for Texas or Florida and still mess up the country’s politics but leave California without the ability to get any taxes from them. Whereas if you enact it nationwide then they’d have to skip the country entirely to dodge it which would be more difficult and not advantage states that don’t agree.
No one really leaves. Pack up and move to a shithole flyover state? Yeah right.
Oh and if I’m wrong? Good.
There was a net internal migration of ~300k people out of California last year, some mega rich have moved too. Red states gaining population and money get boosted electoral college votes and more political influence to sway the entire country rather than just their own states. They’re not disappearing into a vacuum unfortunately.
