IMO, Ralph Nader and Bernie Sanders are/were both always willing to engage and are pretty honest. Both in it to improve the lives of Americans. Even Wesley Clarke seemed resistant to corruption and like a straight shooter to me.
I’d volunteer Vermin Supreme as an example of a candidate in the most recent US election that didn’t give rehearsed answers and kowtow to lobbyists.

Harry S. Truman comes to mind.
Dude was so honest he never accepted big corporate money and was the reason the presidential pension exists.
I mean politicians do occasionally get interview or debate questions they might not expect, in which case they have to answer something too…
