Okay. But them parading around with their banner doesn’t mean shit as far as ownership goes.

Also, the Falklands’ residents overwhelmingly want to stay under the administration of Britain. And the Falklands’ were first settled by the British in 1774 - two years before Argentina was even officially founded as a colony, and decades before it gained independence.

The only claim they have to ownership is proximity. And based on numerous territories around the world, that doesn’t mean shit.

Small correction: Argentina’s claim is not because of proximity, but because the islands are within Argentina’s coastal shelf, which would under normal circumstances be an internationally valid reason.

Still, Argentina lost any legitimacy to their claim when they started and lost the Falklands war (which, at the time, was started by the dictatorial government as a distraction from internal unrest), as opposed to using UN or ICC channels instead.

Falklands are result of british imperialism. Just because you settled your people on a tiny island thousands of miles away from your mainland doesnt mean you own the marine resources around it and to host army bases on it to carry out imperialism. Will of falklanders doesnt mean anything. They are just 2000 people and will be absolutely fine under argentine administration.

        Bullshit.

Just because Argentina happens to be a couple of hundred miles away doesn’t mean they are entitled to the islands, not even if they throw the biggest toddler tantrum about it.

And also, Argentine imperialism is not better than British imperialism. And no, the people living on the islands definitely do deserve a say. And they who want to stay British. They have more of a right to their own self-determination than some petulant brats in Buenos Aires.

          Bullshit.

Its basic geography. The islands are close to argentina and were taken over by the british empire which should be dead by now but is still breathing on the falklands. Its just so similar to israel how they occupied palestinian land and now made it jewish majority to claim the land only difference being one had people and other doesnt.

There is no argentine imperialism to not allow having a military outpost of british empire right at your backyard and giving them access to resources which clearly doesnt belong to them.

Also will of 1.5k-2k people doesnt matter in the bigger picture, especially not if they arent indigenous but settlers.

Your entire argument is based on proximity. Do you own your neighbors house just because it happens to be close to you? Are you happy with China taking over Tibet from the Tibetans simply because China is close by?

You even compare it to Israel and Palestine, which shows you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. England didn’t overtake land from native people in the Falklands. They didn’t push out Argentinians or commit any genocides. They didn’t “take over” from anyone. The island was a British colony before Argentina was even a country. The islands were completely and totally uninhabited when discovered in 1690 and stayed uninhabited until France and England built colonies on the islands in 1765. The colonies were basically abandoned by all three of England (in 1774) and France/Spain (who took over France’s area) in 1811, leaving the island to be once again uninhabited until a German sailor decided to try building a fishing and cattle colony in 1823. Argentina declared independence from Spain in 1816 but was still fighting both a war with Spain and a civil war until 1825. The US didn’t like a private person owning fishing rights to an island, so we broke that shit up in 1831. The Argentinian government tried at that point to put a claim the island, but the people they put there mutinied in less than a month, and England came back to established themselves. The entirety of the Argentinian claim to the island is that they used to be a Spanish colony and that they inherited the island from Spain when they became independent, plus a 3 week stint before the people they put there said to hell with Argentina.

England was there 126 years before Argentina was a country, and they lived on the islands for roughly 9 years. Argentina spent a total of 3 weeks in control there. Nobody at any point in the history of the island wanted Argentina there. There wasn’t a native population to “imperialize.” When put to a democratic vote, 99.8% voted to stay with British rule, and the UN recognizes the right to self determination.

Do you own your neighbors house just because it happens to be close to you

Wrong analogy, correct analogy would be that if some third power from miles away puts people in your neighbor then uses those people as an excuse to carry out its own ambition and create a hostile entity claiming resources around it

Are you happy with China taking over Tibet from the Tibetans simply because China is close by?

Tibet was liberated by Mao and most tibetans support the PRC.

Literally no one gives a fuck if britain cares so much about those 3000 people they are british in the first place and they should move to britain as that climate would suit them better. No one wants a military base and a outpost of western/british imperialism on the coast of south america. Western imperialism has already caused big harms to LATAM and I dont want the facade of “self determination” (that too of settlers) to keep enabling the imperialism.

Edit: Here they are extracting billions of worth of oil from the offshores of falklands in joint venture with israelis. These resources belong to south americans not britishers, its that simple. https://buenosairesherald.com/world/international-relations/argentina-warns-it-will-take-action-over-illegal-offshore-oil-drilling-project-in-malvinas-islands

So Alaska should belong to Canada? What about cuba and the entire Caribbean? They belong to Mexico? Japan should belong to China as should Taiwan? And Israel should take Palestine? Is that what you’re saying?

That’s a slippery slope there watch your step.

So Alaska should belong to Canada

I would like to but I dont care since those people living there arent settlers in the sense of falklanders

What about cuba and the entire Caribbean

              Again false equivalence

Japan should belong to China as should Taiwan

              What are you even saying?

              And Israel should take Palestine

Thats what you believe when you say falklands belong to UK

Slippery slope is liberal hypocrisy and liberal support to colonialism

Something being in the proximity of another doesn’t make them have ownership. That’s silly.

Not more than allowing former colonial empire to establish control over resources around it and establish military outpost on the basis of consensus from settled populace.

I have zero sympathy for British imperialists, but saying that

Will of falklanders doesnt mean anything.

Is plain wrong. Fuck that and pathetic Argentinian nationalism. Hope they remain British forever.

What are you even talking about? The Falklands were uninhabited before they were settled by Europeans.

By your own logic, you shouldn’t even support Argentina’s claim to their own mainland territory, since it was a European colony.

Right, someone was born there. Your point?

By the way, her father was French.

Also just because europeans settled it doesnt mean their mainland own the marine resources around it and get to setup a military base, hope that helps.

But it gives Argentina the right to occupy it, because of “geographical proximity”? That’s the dumbest argument in international law, ever. Might as well justify the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, or the attempted coup of the US in Cuba.

So because a French person was born there in 1830, that invalidates the colonies placed there in 1774? Makes total sense.
