Thumbkey created by @dessalines@lemmy.ml
It takes a lil time to get used to but is fast and efficient once you are.
The main reason I use it is because it’s completely manual and intentional. I got frustrated with other keyboards always suggesting the wrong words and sometimes even over riding the words I intentionally (often painstakingly) typed with an entirely different word that it incorrectly assumed I meant to type.
I like thumbkey on the Unihertz Jelly Star, it’s a keyboard perfect for smaller phones
I use HeliBoard on android. Its sicc.
Seconded! Heliboard is fucking awesome
The level of absolutely perverted customisation Heliboard has is staggering, it’s so good. Moved to it from OpenBoard a while back.
Wait, this is a thing I can change?
Oh my god, I’ve been making a fool of my thumbs this whole time!
Yes! You can get keyboards from the appstore. At least you can on android as far as I know.
I’m asking what people use because Graphines default keyboard kinda sucks ass and is missing a ton of emojis
I’m thinking of just installing gboard but euargh I hate the idea of google getting even more data from me. Especially if it’s everything I type.
Heliboard if you want minimal disruption, ThumbKey if you want to try something different.
I use Heliboard and Desh Chinese Keyboard for the Chinese I’m definitely learning and haven’t not learned for months at all
Don’t think Desh is open source though, but Chinese support is poor in the options I’ve looked at
Yoooo! You’re learning Chinese! 加油
Swiftkey, and I know I need to stop. It’s a Microsoft product that I’ve been using for 15 years.
Same here. It’s such a conflict.
The same with bépo layout 😃
same
iPhone, just the stock one. It’s atrocious. It misspells, and wrongly corrects things more often than it gets it right. I’ve tried changing keyboards, and every single OS update it gets switched back to default. I’m so used to default at this point that changing just messes me up even further.
My iPad, I refuse to use an onscreen keyboard. I did some plumbing work for a friend and got a ‘magic keyboard’ case/keyboard thingy made by Apple in lieu of monies and that’s what I use in my iPad. I just can’t use the on screen keyboard on a tablet sized device. I thumb type and the keyboard is too big and awkward for thumb typing. And I’ve never liked the swipe to type thing.
My favourite thing about the stock keyboard is it has a long standing bug that causes it to press keys you didnt press and it makes me rage like nothing else.
I need to use am iphone for work and I would rather write messages out by hand and use ocr to send rather than wrestle with the autocomplete and autocorrect
keyboard.futo.tech/Privacy focused open source for android. Works pretty well, a little annoying with some punctuation (auto spacing after periods mostly), but not too bad.
E: see below, using heliboard now, seems quite nice
Sadly, the futo developers are fascists associated with Curtis Yarvin.
Heliboard is at least as good and probably better anyway.
Damn that sucks. Thanks for this info, I’ll make a switch asap.
I dont use a keyboard sweaty i just plug my phone into my peenis
Peeboard
GBoard
I know I know I know I know it sucks so bad. But the last few times I checked there were no other options with swipe typing that could handle my Spanglish
Hhhhoboy do I have good news for you.
Heliboard (available on F-Droid) is an open source keyboard that lets you import Google’s swipe-type API, and supports dual-language. I’m literally your use case lmao even the languages, look:

They’re even training their own swipe API and you can volunteer your time swiping words so that they can train it better
Nice!
It doesn’t have Japanese or Chinese though 😭
Can I piggyback to ask for other good keyboards on stock android?
I just use the default iPhone keyboard. Easily my least favorite difference between Android and iOS is how bad this keyboard is. Swipe typing sucks. I often fat finger keys I should not be fat fingering. Predictive typing is something I have to actively fight against. In fact, it was so bad I turned it off entirely.
That said, iPhone’s 9-key Japanese keyboard is really good and responsive. That one I don’t have any issues with whatsoever. My typo rate on it is very low since it’s very intent driven. I doubly appreciate the ASCII emoji key on it. It’s pretty fantastic. ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
If you use GOS or a rooted android you can use Gboard and block network access. But you have to keep your profile goo free otherwise also since Gboard and other apps can leak between them so if you have one shitty app that can get Gboard data and then leak to play store etc. Aurora store is a decent solution there. But otherwise anysoftboard.
I use anysoftkeyboard which I think you can get on Google’s app store and the open source stores like F-droid.
It has it’s quirks like the keyboard layout on every phone I use it on is different and I can’t make them the same. The app is a mess to navigate as well.
But it supports swiping and it’s private. I was using Swiftkey previously, it was great, but now it’s Microsoft and they’re pushing their AI shit in the app
