The growing threat that’s been screamed about on roof tops for over 20 years, that growing threat?
Well, you know it’s a poor countries problem, rich north will be totally insulated from any of this (sarcasm)
20? 40, at least.
Interesting article. I found this sub-topic to be especially concerning (emphasis mine).
There are several reasons why simply moving production north is not an easy solution. Agriculture is not determined by temperature alone. Soil type, the length of days, rainfall patterns, local water availability, pests, farming knowledge/skills, processing facilities and transport infrastructure all matter. Olive groves, vineyards and orchards require years to establish before harvest yields. Irrigation networks and reservoirs take considerably longer. A climate zone can migrate north faster than the agricultural economy built around it. Furthermore, this assumes a new found stability to the climate that simply may not exist in our lifetimes.
How do we cope with this volatility?
Greenhouse subsidies everywhere for moderately stable zones. Eminent domain if a potential plot has a relatively stable climate. And bioreactors to grow raw protein/carbs/vitamins.
Food won’t be nutrient dense or full of the exotic compounds from organically grown stuff, but we should be able to keep citizens from going hungry and assist some refugees.
The fucking pain of it all is that nobody is reducing military budgets when food gets scarce, because food is scarce so it’s the best time to strike.
