Yes, because the richest jerks in the world all got behind it the moment they were all convinced it will lead to AGI (soon). It’s like a collective of the richest of the rich psychopaths decided that this was how they were going to compete with each other instead of just sucking wealth from the world in every way they think they can get away with (and screwing children on Epstein’s island).
Then these assholes who everyone thinks are assholes somehow became the faces behind AI. Not only that, but they don’t give two shits about what or who they destroy in order to obtain their AGI goal.
The good news is that AGI is a pipe dream that’s not going to happen (with LLM tech). Any day now that “AGI hope” will collapse and Big AI is going to stop getting free money from investors.
Once the dust settles, memory and chip prices will come back to normal and LLM/Image AI tech will resume its normal, steady progress and become a tool that anyone can use effectively from their own damned PCs (not the cloud).

Before AI it was cryptocurrency that inflated memory and GPU prices. Then came AI. When AI falls back, something else could very well take its place.
A whole bunch of money hoarders found a sink that they think brings more profits in the long run. Sacrificing consumers and anybody that doesn’t have billions in the bank catering to 0.01% of the population. Nobody trusts dumbasses especially when they have a lot of money.
