Wasn’t the big complaint against Star Trek: Section 31 was that people didn’t want to watch Corrupt Space CIA? And don’t people enjoy SNW and Lower Decks because they embrace the lighter side of Trek?
Honestly I think most Trek movies have tried to get dark and it never lands for me.
American culture never recovered from the grimdark post-9/11 era of the 2000s. They had to tell themselves everyone has a dark side, even the purest heroes, in order to justify systemic killing and torture in the name of The War on Terror™.
