ICE agents have a financial interest in making sure the next administration is one that will keep them funded to get these bonuses. They’ll be deployed to polling areas and will be motivated by this.

The guy committed suicide because he had to pay back his sign on bonus. Dude was eager to be given $50,000 to brutalize minorities and didn’t know what to do after being told he couldn’t do that anymore and he owed US that money back. Why would I have any sympathy for him?
Because the broken workers’ compensation system affects all US workers. Why should you want to give healthcare to billionaires? Because that’s how universal socialized healthcare works. Why should you want to give extra money to cops? Because universal basic income is universal, and you give it even to your political enemies. You should want workers to be protected in the face of a workplace injury because someday you might experience a workplace injury.

I am not advocating that workers’ compensation insurance should pay back signing bonuses after employees are fired, I am suggesting that employees should not be able to be terminated for receiving a workplace injury. I don’t want ICE to have any $50k under any circumstances, I want them to have to keep the injured ICE agent on their payroll while he rehabilitates so he keeps his signing bonus and ICE can’t hire a replacement. This person fucking sucked, but I want ICE doing as little as possible, and I want ICE agents standing trial at Den Hague and this accomplishes neither of those goals, and it highlights that I have no protections as a worker in the US. Everyone who wants to celebrate is entitled to celebrate, I am just trying to say there are multiple lenses through which to view this story, and only one was represented so I brought another.
The article states the agency was trying to fire him for 3 months before his car accident and a few days before he would get his next installment of his signing bonus. He wasn’t fired to avoid a workman’s comp.
