No no, we must support the lesser evil and in doing so forget that they are evil. The genocide in Gaza started on January 20th, 2025, and would’ve never started if Harris had won.

The far right criticises the Dems as much as the left.

You 100% have to make it clear where the critique comes from.

It’s easy to tell as the right’s criticism is they eat babies, they’re demon spawn, welfare queens, nothing true just emotionally applied rhetoric. Where as the left would say they’re barely better than Republicans in regards to wars and keeping them going in perpetuity, they could pass universal healthcare instead of what the ACA was but through either naivety or incompetence reached out to Republicans to help make a plan “both parties would be happy with” for the Republicans not to vote for it at all.

Eh, universal healthcare got side shuffled by the insurance company consultants and thus got us the ACA, a compromised deal if ever there was one. We really need universal healthcare, but the Herbalife grifters wouldn’t then have as much ways to peddle their MLM.

The primary difference is that Republicunts completely discount any thing that is left wing as impossible to achieve, often by using circular logic that boils down to a faulty appeal to authority (religion), with a light sprinkling of racism and white superiority rhetoric mixed in.

Leftists actually use verifiable data points and publically available economic figures mixed with objective reasoning to levy their critiques.

Reading comprehension includes understanding the implied context of the words, not just being able to pronounce them properly.

The issue is the amount of bad faith critique levelled by people on the right. Supporting one of their valid criticisms without mentioning that they are normally full of shit appears like a blanket endorsement even though they may bring up only a single good point it’ll be seen as complete support.

Sure but that’s not the point. If someone gives good criticism, that criticism is good.

If you don’t believe that, you’re a tribalist.

The world gets better when everyone acknowledges and fixes their problems when they’re pointed out. It doesn’t matter at all whether it’s a good person or a bad person that points them out, what a gift it is for someone to show you your flaws.

Humans evaluate facts by the source. People trust their in-group. Someone is far more likely to listen to someone they trust and perceive as in-group than someone who’s out-group, regardless of the facts.

Sometimes this makes sense. If a guy in a nazi uniform told me the bar down the street is a great time, I’m probably not going to go there.

Would depend on the content of the critique Id think, like, if your criticism of the dems is that theyre far too conservative, thats not the sort of thing that someone that considers conservatism a good thing would say. If you give some vague attack on their moral character or intelligence or such, that lines up more with how the right would also criticism them, and therefore invites more confusion.

I’m not saying that you need to put “fuck the GOP too” next to every criticism. But if all you say is “fuck the Dems for ruining the country”, it’s not obvious where you stand.

“Fuck the Dems for being too conservative” on the other hand makes it obvious.

In addition to what people have already pointed out regarding perception of alignment, there is an issue of exposure to negative information and prioritization:

We know that simply being exposed to something repeatedly alters how we perceive that thing and carry it forward.

Simply by increasing people’s exposure to deeply negative sentiment towards Democrats without simultaneously exposing them to deeply negative sentiment towards Republicans can and will change how people feel, up to and including thinking there’s no point in voting.

There is a time and place for going after the Democrats for their absolutely horrible policies and fucking awful campaign strategies. One month before ballots are cast is not that time.

If we fail to take back Congress this country is truly fucked, IMO. At this specific moment in time, that needs to be our sole focus and narrative.

Or they just straight up say that. I’ve been told by “leftists” so many times that there’s no point in voting for the democrat because they’re going to do all the same shit that the republicans do, despite all available evidence.

If we fail to take back Congress this country is truly fucked, IMO. At this specific moment in time, that needs to be our sole focus and narrative.

One month before ballots are cast is not that time.

And neither is two months before ballots are cast, or three months before ballots are cast, and of course when it comes to the general election year is right out. The end result is that the time where you shouldn’t criticise The Party becomes a nontrivial fraction of a person’s whole life, and especially the politically significant portions of a person’s life (given that “right before the election” would normally be a very good time to put a proverbial gun to the party’s head). You’re basically sacrificing a good chunk of democracy to protect the Democrats at that point.

About 30 days is when I expect folks to stop actively harming the better of the candidates.

Between the primaries and 30 days is when it’s appropriate to criticize campaign strategy (e.g. “what you’re doing will cost you votes”).

Before the primaries is when it’s appropriate to champion alternative candidates and heavily criticize front-runners with bad policy.

Once the primaries are over you are stuck with that candidate. That is the reality of our system. As I replied elsewhere, it is shameful but good policy doesn’t win elections. Popular policy wins elections. So once the primaries are over, we ought to stop focusing on good policy - the winning candidate is going to do whatever they want once in office anyway, and there’s no changing candidates at that point - and start focusing on winning the damn election, even if that means swallowing a bitter pill.

EDIT: To paraphrase a quote from one of my favorite television scenes, “If Democrats are so fucking smart then why do we lose so goddamn always?” We have a problem with eating our own. Nobody gets everything they want. You fight for what you want until the candidate is picked, then you get that candidate elected as long they’re better than the opposition.

Also if a dem candidate is running on a bad platform the relevant time to criticize that is while they’re running, since that’s the whole point of the platform. There are criticisms which make the most sense to mention at specific times. Trying to mention a Democrats anti-trans ad, for example, and how that negatively affects trans people after the ad is off the air and the election is over makes no sense.

The relevant time to criticize them is during the primaries when you can actually still get a different candidate, as well as leading up to the vote, focusing on criticism of their strategy for securing votes.

But 30 days before a vote, literally nothing you say will make any difference except in helping the opposition suppress voter turnout.

Shamefully, good policy doesn’t win elections. Popular policy wins elections. Good policy is how you pick your candidates. Popular policies is how you get your candidate elected.

Bingo. Can’t do it after an election because it’s too early to matter, have to see how they govern first. Can’t do it during a primary because we need to focus on electability. Can’t do it for the general because we have to win.

Amazing how there will always be time later for self reflection right around the corner…

Exactly this - if I don’t know you personally well enough to know that you “of course” would never support republicans, then I have no way to tell from which direction you are attacking the Dems.

Once we reached a point where it was no longer safe to assume that Nazi shit and overt racism, bigotry, etc. was sarcastic, we all had to stop assuming that anyone knew we were better than that. That’s also when /s tags became absolutely necessary again, even when saying some absolutely bonkers shit. I long for the days when I could safely assume that no one was that stupid, and that they would assume I wasn’t either.

If someone criticizes the dems for being too woke, or whatever other right-wing bullshit, that implies they’re doing so because they’re criticizing anyone left of the dems. If someone criticizes a dem for being transphobic, or too conservative/centrist, or not meaningfully pushing for change while in power, that implies they’re doing so from a left-wing perspective and aren’t supporting Republicans or whatever.
