A Texas school district canceled a high school’s fall musical after a female student was cast as the male lead. The decision, it said, was an effort to comply with the state’s anti-drag law — which was struck down in August.

Ana Mota, a senior at South Grand Prairie High School, was initially cast as Seymour in her school’s student production of Little Shop of Horrors following days of what she described as tough auditions, The Dallas Morning News reports. The starring role, Mota told local ABC affiliate WFAA, was supposed to be one of her final performances before graduating next spring.

I guess the people who canceled this aren’t aware that Shakespeare used male actors to play female roles. Gender swapping on the stage goes way back. I mean, why would you want to be aware of history or English literature when you’re running a school?

I think it’s an excellent age appropriate way to teach them that the system in Texas is out to hurt them, before it tries to starve them and steal from them and imprison them or otherwise terrify them into submission with violence.

It’s definitely an unintentional learning experience for them about how fucked up the system is. Maybe it’ll help radicalize them early on
