Thanks! The process will vary a bit depending on what I’m doing the figures for, but generally I start with the purpose of the pose.
Sometimes there’s a story or narrative that informs the pose, and sometimes I’m doing the pose to do something else, like costumes or turnaround sheets. I’ll do thumbnail gestures to do variations based on that purpose and pick one or two to expand on. I’ll do a bigger gesture for that, check the balance, fill out the basic forms, and then add or finish little details, like anatomy that sits on top of the basic forms. Then I’ll flip the drawing and check to see if it’s balanced, tweak any details I feel need correction, and then flip it back.
If I’m just noodling around, I start with whatever area of the body seems most important - usually the head or torso - though sometimes I’ll have a specific idea or feel in mind, and I’ll start with whatever part of the pose seems most prominent. Like, the female figure at the bottom right, I thought, “I want a slinky female figure with a hand raised menacingly, as if pointing or casting a spell”, so I started with her raised hand and worked my way down from there.
These are some good figure drawings! What kind of a process do you take when drawing them?
