Canada@lemmy.ca•Calgary Opera has removed bass-baritone Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega from future performances of "Tosca" after he unveiled a Palestinian flag during the curtain call on opening night.English
2·5 days agoThere’s no gray area here.
He’s opportunistically hijacking the platform that is the opera company’s viewership.
He, alone, had no right to this platform and the company is well within their rights to remove him.
As a thought exercise, (and I can scarcely believe this needs to be said) imagine he came out waving an Israeli flag.
If that last sentence got any of this crowd irritated, we might admit what this instance did for the operators of the opera company.

Perhaps imagine you’re in charge of running a live theater company and after the show one of your actors starts waving around an Israeli flag.

12·5 days agoNobody thinks its during the performance but everybody sees that its using the opera company’s mouthpiece. The company performs to and employs people of various backgrounds and persuasion and has every valid incentive to remain apolitical. It wants to engage the public in love for opera. And nothing else.
I truly don’t see what is so difficult to grasp here.

17·6 days agoThe most egregious thing about this post is the grammar.
I’ve read this many times now and the most charitable translation I can come up with is thst you meant “not every” and “did think.”
But its truly a baffling sentence in the english language.
