wasn’t really a suggestion, but even Elon can’t anti-woke his model away from reality. the billionaire class controls congress already.

honestly we could replace US congress with a system like this, and public life would probably improve over the current situation. at least an LLM can’t be bribed with a $500 meal and will actually read the legislation.

the world has gone absolutely crazy that these guys think they can just say this stuff. “the world is gonna be a little worse while i get super rich” is an insane thing to say as public comment.

they did mention doing harmonization studies, which is my biggest worry: cascading ecological effects.
the impetus can’t be “oh well they haven’t done the full studies so i guess we just full send and see what happens”.

It shouldn’t have to take fifteen years to deploy effective products that can save lives
this is such a reductionist view.
it should absolutely take decades to make a sweeping decision to fundamentally alter an ecosystem. nobody likes disease or even getting a random bite. i grew up in the swamps of the US, i know. but we should absolutely know what we’re doing to release a genetically engineered or bacterial sterilizing agent into a naturally evolved ecosystem.
is it just me or is there a lot of churn in the Svelte ecosystem? i do love the concept of Svelte even if i don’t have a lot of use for it personally, but i feel like there’s a big feature rewrite or major version bump every year.
(as an old Android developer, i know this feature churn game all too well)

“radical communism” 🙄
the GOP and even a lot of people on “the left” in the US couldn’t give you half the description of what communism is. this regulation falls squarely under classical Liberalism, and despite their squawking about Libertarianism or whatever Republicans act more like Liberals than their ideology poisoned brains could comprehend.

better headline: “rationalizing amoralism as relativistic morality is this century’s biggest scam”

no shame in getting a VPS. it might cost you more over the long term if you want to run any real workloads or store anything on it.
what i would do is get your hands on some sort of computer you can attach storage to.
what i do is i have a small VPS that i expose to the internet that routes traffic to my home server(s) over my Tailscale VPN. that way i get the benefit of having a stable public IP, some traffic protection from the provider, and a stable failsafe in case my home internet or power or whatever goes out, and it’s a lot cheaper to run workloads and store files on my local machines than to rent all that out. my workloads can be pretty heavy, so i would end up paying hundreds if not over $1k per year, which is easily enough for a machine that can do most anything you need.

i feel so bad for all the people that are terrorized by me riding my bike in my residential neighborhood where they just wanted to take a shortcut in their pristine lifted F-250. i’m sure they took the toolbox off and just got it washed this morning on the way to their office job.

obscurity != security
that said, you gotta be safe and make sure you’re not committing keys, passwords, etc.
there is never a 100% security guarantee.

Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter is the title of a letter published by the Future of Life Institute in March 2023. The letter calls “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4”, citing risks such as AI-generated propaganda, extreme automation of jobs, human obsolescence, and a society-wide loss of control.[1] It received more than 30,000 signatures, including academic AI researchers and industry CEOs such as Yoshua Bengio, Stuart Russell, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Yuval Noah Harari.

people have been talking about a plateau since 2020 as well (basically since implementations of Attention is All You Need ie transformer architecture has been popular). but it’s hard to know for sure, since what used to be public (you might call it “Open”) scientific research is now closely guarded trade secrets.
true enlightenment: everything is a string over an IO socket

you know, i smoked away my memory in college, but i swear people in media have goldfish brain. these companies have been talking about this for a decade. remember when they were hesitant to release GPT-2 because of how dangerous it was?
this is just more marketing. “oh no my products are so powerful we’re just way too awesome at making stuff uwu.” shovel salesman says there’s too much gold in the hills.

funny i just migrated to the SMLIGHT last night. with Zigbee2MQTT, it was a pretty painless migration.

hot take: the app is usually a better experience. the browser sucks for so many reasons.
that said, i refuse to download Twitter, TikTok, Reddit, and a few others, and i resent them for defacing their own site to try and force conversions. but if there is an app/company i really utilize, i prefer the app every time, from a UX perspective.

i mean, i’m not arguing for this position necessarily. i agree with you.
that said, in practice, the “bad data” comes out in the wash. for example, all of Reddit is likely in their datasets. who knows what their data cleaning process is like, but diversity in the data is generally a good thing from a training perspective.
dang. i kind of viewed Deno as the Firefox of JS runtimes, especially after what happened to Bun. the headline was initially encouraging; Cloudflare is doing some good work in the Rust networking systems space. i hate that they’re shutting it down though. let’s be realistic: without a core team working on feature parity with Node.js the project is effectively dead.
