4·5 days agoHm… Worth a try. :) Somehow I didn’t find it, I only saw something called “notebookbar”. Thanks. I don’t use any office suites (besides Google Spreadsheets to keep track of my video games spend) myself so I’m clueless.

2·6 days agoI’m trying to move my dad from Windows 10 to Linux and that is precisely what he said. He is used to the Ribbon UI in MS Office and can’t find his way in LibreOffice.

Voyager@lemmy.world•Suggestion: Also release Voyager on the App stores with `PieFed` in the name.English
4·7 days agoI think of the nice things about PieFed is that you don’t need to install an app, you can ‘install’ the webapp, which works just fine .
Meanwhile, Voyager works great . :) I started with the PWA, but I like using Voyager a lot more because of the presentation, the swipe gestures (I was a user of Apollo for Reddit on iOS, Voyager is the closest experience). The PWA is decent, but to me a dedicated mobile app is two classes above.

Android@lemdro.id•Manufacturers want you to say goodbye to small phones once and for allEnglish
11·9 days agoI had an iPhone 5 for a few years, it was the perfect size for me. When Apple enlarged their smartphones with iPhone 6 I jumped back to Android because I had more options there. I went back to iPhone 11 Pro because it was again on the smaller side. After years of rejecting >=6’’ phones I finally gave in with Pixel 8 and Pixel 10…

3·10 days agoMy only issue is with banking apps and our national ID app which is very useful. I know some work, but I haven’t seen all that I have listed, so I would have to be the guinea pig :) I actually have an older Pixel phone with a shattered screen, I was planning to have it repaired, so I guess that’s where I can test GrapheneOS safely.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•[App] I made a Circle to Search alternative that works on any Android (with multiple search engines)English
38·10 days agoGreat idea! However, something bothers me. From F-Droid:
This app relies on catbox.moe to upload images and Google, Bing, Yandex, TinyEye, Perplexcity and ChatGPT for search.
I am not familiar with that service, so I went to the website and looked at FAQ:
How long does Catbox keep files for?
Forever. If you don’t want your file to stick around until the heat death of the universe, use Litterbox. Are you (F)(L)OSS?
no.Not sure what it is exactly but having my uploaded files stored in some obscure database until the heat death of the universe does not fill me with trust.
I have a Pixel phone and used the screen scanning tech (forgot how it’s called, but it’s the same feature, I believe) for OCR to copy the WiFi password from a photo of the sticker that’s on the router and of course it immediately sent that password to Google and run the search, ugh. I don’t want to send my WiFi password to some website I never even heard about, either.
Can you explain how it works?

Android@lemdro.id•WhatsApp is now testing its subscription service, here's what you get and how much it costsEnglish
5·10 days agoSignal and Telegram both offer comparable functionality without mandatory recurring fees
Telegram introduced a subscription named Telegram Premium a few years ago. You get similar functionality there – setting colors to your profile or groups that you’re part of, custom emojis (including animated ones), custom stickers, an indicator that you’re on Premium, custom profile statuses, increased limits for sending files, etc. There’s a lot more, I just listed some off the top of my head. They’ve been pushing people into Premium. Telegram is perfectly usable without that, of course. My favorite Premium feature is that you can require unknown senders to pay a fee to be able to send you a message :D Meanwhile, non-Premium users can get spammed normally.

8·11 days agoNot a bad idea :) I use a Logitech mouse connected via their proprietary dongle which is in my PC, but I guess it might work if I plugged it into my monitor. I will remember that. Thanks.

Technology@piefed.social•eSIM was supposed to replace SIM cards, but carriers turned it into a trapEnglish
28·12 days agoI dropped my “old” (less than 2 years 😭) Pixel and shattered the screen. As I can’t go about without a smartphone I had to get a replacement ASAP. Of course I had eSIM there. I couldn’t access my old phone because I can’t see anything on its screen (I actually hooked it up to my monitor and was able to navigate to some extent by guessing where to tap, but it’s cumbersome and I often miss-tap). Moving the eSIM to my new Pixel required me to contact my carrier’s customer support. I thought it would be an easy process, where I simply log in to my customer portal and carry out the procedure there by myself. Nope. Also, I learned that the first transfer is free of charge, but I will have to pay the next time. What? :/

3·12 days agoHow long before you’re trying tiling window managers?
I never felt the appeal. My understanding is that all windows must be on the screen all the time (but maybe some window managers support workspaces?) and I don’t like that. I like to have my web browser windows big, same as my IDE. I have 34’’ 1440p monitor and it’s too small for me to fit all the windows :)

1·12 days agoI’m not sure how difficult OpenSuse rollbacks are.
They are actually very easy. Check the list of snapshots and note the one from before you screwed up, reboot, select the snapshot from which you want to launch the system, test, if it’s OK run
sudo snapper rollbackand reboot. I use LUKS / TPM with auto-unlock, so I need to reenroll the keyI know setting up Snapper to snapshot takes a few extra steps/maintance.
In openSUSE it’s set up out of the box, that was one of the reasons behind my choice of this distro.

1·13 days agoI migrated from the US servers to the EU servers and while looking through my settings I noticed that my renewal was $19.80 instead of $12 last year. At first I thought that the EU servers are much more expensive and was upset that support didn’t tell me before migration, but it turns out that’s just the new price.
