I love the idea that the mythological hero Ahti Saarelainen one day retires from seafaring adventure and spends his days cleaning up in an eldritch location.

Who knows. Maybe he became Eldritch himself? Ahti (at least in Control) is really not explored much. A great character but shrouded in constant shadow and mystery. So it very well might be. Who the fuck knows. When he talks about wanting to go on vacation he does talk about a beach and how he likes the sounds of the sea…

I specifically want Remedy to not expose his past. Mystery is what keeps the lore interesting. On a tangential note, this is why I will never forgive Chris fucking Chibnall for retconning The Doctor’s origins in Doctor Who’s later seasons.

I don’t care about retconning as long as its done well. Chibnall proceeded to go to Doctor Who and make a mess and a mockery of everything, turning the Doctor into a joke as well as their past, squandering the only female Doctor we’ve had and giving her endlessly shit material for her to waste her talent on.

          Fuck him.

What happens to Ahti and where he might go are pretty damn spoilery given his discussions in Control and things said in the other game in question.

Thought that was kind of obvious.

And none of that was spoilered. Stating that a character is in a movie or a game is not a spoiler. Dumbledore being a part of a harry potter movie is not a spoiler.

Your comparison doesn’t work. Harry Potter movies are all called Harry Potter movies. The game mentioned in question has a completely different name and is not categorically stated to be in the same world on its own. Having the character in both is a spoiler.

You’re just arguing in bad faith. I’m going to block you now and go back to not knowing you exist, a state of being that is far more enjoyable. Goodbye.

You would expect him to be in Harry Potter, you wouldn’t expect him to be in an entirely different franchise.

Oh wow I love Control and had no idea about this mythology. Didn’t even think to look more into him. Just figured he was the wise old janitor that knew more and was more important than he let on

Unfortunately much of Finnish mythology comes from a single source, the Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot, which was written long after christian missionaries polluted the folklore. It’s an interesting mythology, and very distinct from the surrounding Germanic faiths.

I’m a school bus driver and it’s hilarious how kids think I can’t hear anything when I actually hear everything that goes on in the bus. Same as the janitor though, I just don’t want to get involved with that shit and have to do any paperwork.

Hell, one time some of the kids were vaping on my bus and I ignored it.

Ahti is a character introduced in the video game Control and with appearances elsewhere. He’s a extremely mysterious figure. Very little is known about him beyond the fact that is a janitor for the Oldest House, headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control.

Highly recommend Control. Truly amazing game with incredible lore, a mindfuck of a story, and some stunningly beautiful/terrifying atmosphere.

Also for those who are considering Alan Wake 2… Play Control first. Trust me. Especially the Control AWE DLC.

Ahti is also a Finnish character. He repeatedly speaks Finnish throughout the game. His janitor carts also all have little radios that play the same song, the ‘Sankarin Tango’. A song performed by the model/voice actor for Ahti, performed entirely in Finnish. Great song actually. You’ll even catch the character singing along to the music occasionally.

That scene when you get the tape player was too good. I made a save just for that part because of how fun it was. And yes the DLC goes into the incidents in the first game.

I’ve got a question. I absolutely hated Alan Wake when it came out. I truly don’t understand why anyone would have anything above mediocre to say about it. I got the chance to play the remastered version recently and still hate that game.

The positive press Remedy got for that game was the reason I still haven’t played Quantum Break, and why I skipped Control until it was given away for free. Given the rave reviews for Alan Wake, I didn’t trust any of it. I’m glad I got to play Control however, because it deserves every single bit of praise it got. It’s an amazing game.

So, given that I felt Alan Wake suffered from a terrible storyline, mediocre acting, and bland, boring gameplay that was downright frustrating, but absolutely adored everything about Control, even the AWE DLC, would you recommend Alan Wake 2?

It’s hard to say if you hated the first game so much because the gameplay is definitely based around the original game, but it’s much smoother and more fluid, you’re given a lot more tools to use, there are a lot more varied gameplay mechanics, and a lot more varied enemy types and environments and level design and stuff (it’s not all just forest, forest, and more forest). It feels way less clunky and awkward and like you’re constantly struggling against the character and the gameplay, and a lot more intuitive and engaging in comparison.

The story itself takes a lot of style and plot beats from Control and references Control a lot. Personally I liked the first Alan Wake game, largely for its atmosphere, but I can definitely see it’s flaws and why some people wouldn’t like it, but I felt the second game improved on every aspect by a lot and gave me a lot more Control vibes than the first one did. I actually started replaying Control right after finishing Alan Wake 2 because it gave me so much Nostalgia for Control lol, though at the same time it doesn’t feel like it’s just copying or just rehashing Control either. The gameplay itself is not like Control though, not even remotely, which makes sense because they’re very different games and as much as I LOVE the Control gameplay it wouldn’t have made sense to use it for Alan Wake 2. It’s definitely based on the original Alan Wake style gameplay on a basic level, but done much much better in my opinion. Some people have compared it a bit to games like The Last of Us 1 and 2 which seems like a reasonable comparison from what I remember of those games. I personally also liked the story and characters and felt that was pretty well done as well, certainly better than the first game imo.

That’s the best I can offer you in terms of info and opinion on the game, so it’s up to you whether you think it’s worth trying out.

Steam no longer sells it separately, they only sell the ultimate edition with both dlc included.

If you got Control via the Humble Bundle, you’ll have to buy the dlc through them, and then activate via Steam.
